Good questions are starting to be asked #datacenter "scope 2" indirect water use — the water used to generate the electricity they use. Here's a key point: that #water use is extremely high if fossil fuels are used to generate the electricity. But very low if renewable #energy is used.

Things aren't any merrier on the other side of the Oder. Alice Weidel and her AfD colleagues were still talking yesterday about an "inexplicable peace gesture toward Russia" and the "collapse of the German economy," but today their comment sections look like a ghost town from a Western.

When Russia's supercomputers went down, half a million "outraged citizens" suddenly vanished from the German internet — folks who, in five different languages, were posting the exact same scripts about cheap gas.

Suddenly, politicians who were striking tough-guy poses against the establishment yesterday found themselves without their digital steroids.

All that menacing, anti-European fervor of theirs, without troll factory backup, looks like a fierce dog whose tail batteries just got yanked out.

It seems that when they flip the router switch in Russia, this whole loud "alternative for Europe" is left with a handful of genuine supporters, scratching their heads over why all those millions of internet heart emojis were typed in Polish and German but thought in Cyrillic.

Sain ensimmäistä kertaa elämässäni kutsun eduskunnan valiokunnasta tulla kuultavaksi oman organisaationi edustajana. Valiokuntakuulemisilla täydennetään valiokunnan käytettävissä olevaa tietopohjaa ennen mietinnön tai lausunnon laatimista. Asiantuntijoiden kuuleminen antaa valiokunnalle mahdollisuuden tarkastella käsiteltävää asiaa hallituksen esitystä laajemmin.

Olin innoissani ja otettu tällaisesta mahdollisuudesta. Jännittäen matkustin Arkadianmäelle esittelemään lausuntoni, jota olimme kollegoiden kanssa hieroneet pitkään ja huolella. Olimme panostaneet esityksen visuaalisuuteen ja selkeyteen, koska tiesimme edustajien olevan kiireisiä. Valiokuntaan oli kutsuttu myös kolme muuta asiantuntijaa.

Esitykseni sujui hyvin, mutta minulle jäi tunne, että se meni kuin kuuroille korville. Valiokunnan 17 edustajasta paikalla oli kymmenen, joista kahdeksan räpläsi älylaitteittaan haukotellen ja kyllästyneen näköisenä kaikkien neljän esityksen ajan. Ainoastaan kaksi edustajaa keskittyi esityksiin.

Oloni kuulemisen jälkeen oli hyvin pettynyt. Jäin kaipaamaan kohtaamista ja aitoa toisten kuuntelemista. Edustajat eivät olleet läsnä, vaikka olimme kaikki samassa huoneessa. Vain yksi edustajista katsoi minua silmiin esityksen aikana.

Olihan minua tästä varoitettu, mutta ei se auttanut valmistautumaan siihen, että kuuleminen ei tarkoittanutkaan sitä, että minua kuunneltaisiin.

Kävin kuulemisen jälkeen kahvilassa ja matkustin bussilla kotiin. Tuntui merkitykselliseltä, kun kahvilan työntekijä ja bussikuski tervehtivät hymyillen ja katsoivat minua silmiin. Minut huomioitiin.

So while we think we are heading toward ~3C today, we could really end up at 4C if we role 6s on the proverbial climate dice. Its more useful to treat climate outcomes as a set of risks – the odds of the world warming by 2C, 3C, or 4C over time – rather than a deterministic outcome.
