Took a while to get to it but THYSIASTERY is very fun and has incredible atmosphere. Having to juggle distances between enemies Mystery Dungeon-style with a Wizardry-like combat makes you use items and level layouts in cool ways. If you are looking for a one-weekend crawler give this one a try :)

even in contexts where random encounters fit better (mostly games with a significant emphasis on dungeon crawling) i suspect better things are possible.. i'm unimpressed with repels and eo-style "proximity" indicators, which feel like duct tape more than refinements

imo part of "make small games" is really "let yourself make imperfect games" when you stop worrying about being perfect you can let yourself try goofy-ass things and see if they work!! and if they don't it's fine. it's not gonna be your last game, right?
