So hate speech is illegal. #CdnPoli 0209
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Wow, [Removed by Reddit] - here's what it used to say: Intolerance has existed long before social media. There are ways to counter it. Make fun of them. Ruthlessly. It's OK to bully racists online. Literally run them out of town. It had 56 upvotes in victoriabc, I noticed it got removed days later 000

Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Working families aren't pulling 1m/year. If they are, they can afford it. Property taxes on a 1m property is a drop in the bucket compared to rent on a 2br in the city. If the bank thinks they can afford it, I'm assuming they can. Key takeaway I think is wealth != income. This is for 1m income. 030
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 03/10/2026I don't think it's possible to actually read the sign, one would need to go to the top floor there and look around from the edge, or, the building behind where I was standing might provide a better view a few floors up. I'm pretty sure this is an edge case of the accessible positioning guidelines. 000
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 03/10/2026So this is funny, was walking downtown #yyj, near that parkade next to the church that recently got the green light to... Not be that. Anyway, there's the standard "development being proposed" sign but it's impossible to read due to positioning. They put it at the top?? 200
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Have you been inside before? I went when I was maybe 8 or 9, in the 90s when it was the maritime museum. There are trap doors, secret passages. It is a relic that needs to be preserved. It can be a museum, all on its own. It wasn't open when I went, but there would be gallows, or remnants of such. 110
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 03/10/2026I tried to get a photo showing floor to ceiling the whole side. Metadata from the photo says August 6, 2026. It's such a cool building, too. Can someone from the province actually stand up and acknowledge this building? Wtf are we doing here?! 110

Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Permanent DST usually lasts until push comes to shove, and a bunch of elementary kids walking to school get run down because the driver is bleary-eyed and it's pitch black out before school starts in the dead of winter. Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Look at the non-enforsed cansidates. It's the exact same slate.... Who tf are these people?? 100
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 02/10/2026The Victoria sustainability network do this "gang of five" thing a lot. 100
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 02/10/2026There's a common phrase you'll hear from opposing candidates, "the gang of five" This is *wild* to me, and I'm not sure if anyone is making the connection to the cultural revolution, but MY GOD this rhetoric needs to be tuned down. Do they really think Victoria council is being Maoist here?!? 100

Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I wonder what happens if folks show up to these citizens assemblies and say "this is fine, actually" I think the whole thing is predicated on a silent majority sharing Bruce's vision for the city. Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Have you considered joining the great federation of Canada?? 000
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 02/10/2026But today, when left looking at the options for whom to give feilty to the highest government office, for federated control of the great NA.. Reviewing each of the options, the "leader" of the pack, can't help but think of arrested development.... "Her?" .... Not a great option. 100
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 02/10/2026So where does that leave us. I think parts of Monroe make sense. We are separated by oceans from everyone else. Anyone entering NA with an invading force would not be welcome, I think that makes sense. I also think it makes sense for it to be a federation of 2nd level governments, states & provinces 100
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 02/10/2026That is the hard stop for me. The place where I get off the annexation train. Americans don't provide basic freedoms to their populace. The constitution so many are sworn to defend & protect is a ragged ancient document that has no place guiding law in the year of our lord twenty twenty six 100
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 02/10/2026And all of this without a fundamental and modern set of human rights. I need to look at amendments to find what should be encoded. And the things that haven't been encoded are substantial, left to reside on judicial convention which is eroded by bought & paid for legislators, judges & executors. 100
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 02/10/2026The invasion of wealth into the political sphere, and the capability for corporate entities to excert considerable control over elected officials, and the politicization of public service and professional associations. Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 02/10/2026It's terrifying the rhetoric coming out of Washington these days. Outright invading sovereign nations to acquire control of their oil fields (referring to Venezuela), to the threats of annexation of long standing allies & descriptions of immigrants and foreigners as vermin or parasites 100
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Back when it was announced (James Monroe, president of USA circa 1823) it was only targetted towards Europe, but has since come to encompass Russia, China and any foreign power the US views as a threat. Indeed Monroe is synonymous with "One America" ... That is, intended to be the whole continent. 100
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Having a thought on the Monroe Doctrine. This is basically the idea that "we [Americans] do our own colonizing over here, tyvm, we don't need no foreign European powers interfering with that." 100

Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 01/10/2026The max lime passes are definitely worth it. They expire in a month, and it's $35. If you use these bikes literally more than twice it makes sense to get subscription & pass. Works out to 10m/day. Buys a ride like this every couple days, good for cooldown! 101
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Finally got my watch to record the bike ride. Someone suggested to me Vancouver Street, which is a great suggestion, the whole scariness of cook st is avoided completely, much less busy street. I think next time I try Richardson down to St. Charles, that'll be the boundary of lime zone. Tour de #yyj 110
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Specifically referring to Mike Harris here. I'm pretty sure he hasn't visited downtown Victoria since 2016, and gets all his views about this place from the lead-brained boomer takes on Facebook. There's a non-zero chance he rips up every single bike lane given the chance. I wouldn't put it past him 000
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 01/10/2026This doesn't apply to everyone, obviously, but my goodness there is A LOT of old wealth here, and they want nothing more than to elect officials that sit in their hands and do nothing but establish an authoritarian state, because of the warzone. These people are detached from reality. 000
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Then tell them to take out their cheque book and give more, (call them and absolute cunt here if you need to, to really drive home the point), because they can afford it. They could afford to pay double what they are now, be real. Give that money to our place in the meantime. 100
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 01/10/2026If someone looks you, straight in the eye, and says "property taxes are too high in Victoria, BC and need to be lowered," be sure to remind them of their million dollar home, then remind them to take a walk down 900 block and see how good they actually have it. Walk, don't drive. You'll be fine. 200
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Some of us who live here are VERY WEALTHY and some of us who live here are VERY POOR. Any increase to the only tax the city can realistically raise (property taxes) is bourne by the VERY WEALTHY property and business owners. 100
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Victoria has walkable infrastructure, a bike lane network. People are engaged with civics and the potential for major projects. People are well fed, get exercise, can be their true selves. The city could always use more investment. Yea, that's the other thing. 120
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 01/10/2026If anyone leads with some kind of "broken" rhetoric, it's a hard no. This city is world class and anyone describing downtown core as some kind of warzone is a bit detached from reality. This is literally paradise? Like lemme go ahead and *broadly gesture* at the world at it's worst. Yet Victoria? 130
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Meanwhile, pointing at > 0 homeless people as a sign that absolutely nothing is being done, or what is being done is making everything worse, or whatever is being done is somehow causing a drug pandemic. What is clear is whatever IS being done is bad, everything is awful no one can fix this but me. 110
Tyler Waters @tswaters.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Thoughts on the #yyj municipal election. I think there's a lot of candidates out there that are decrying a "crisis" in the city , accusing existing elected of being arrogant, not listening to the public, and ramming $NICHE_PROJECT_SOME_NIMBY_TOLD_ME_ABOUT through council without any consultation. 120
