My kid's school has switched payment portals to one that processes all payments through PayPal. And that was so much more painful than it should have been. Why does PayPal suck so much? (So much more than I remember.)

There have been two Mondays this week and I am so fucking tired and the ducts are too complicated and my brain won't brain properly because it's stuck on the fucking ducts.

Curses. This custom duct is 7 inches too long in between the two joins
A duct with two smaller ducts coming off at an angle. It's temporarily held together with masking tape.

God Gave Rock & Roll To You
My nonfiction reading this year has been Leah Payne's God Gave Rock & Roll To You which is a history book that follows the waxing and waning of CCM, Christian contemporary music. It's written for a broad audience, but at it's heart, it's still a history book and very careful about the connections it makes. As someone who lived in some of this history, I feel like there should have been a little more gossip.

Authority
Jesus is causing trouble in the temple and the temple leadership comes along for his credentials. Who said you could barge in here and throw out useful members of the temple community? Who gave you the authority to do this? Jesus refuses to answer. But then he tells a parable and this week I'm seeing the parable as an answer, although it turns the whole question upside down.

I listened to a lot of country music in my early 20s. Precisely while I was living and working in a community that was far more urban and much much wealthier than the white working class that people often envision as country music's primary audience.

Today's task: ducts. In particular, installing three of these register boots.
The bottom of a subfloor with a bit of ducting coming through the floor, changing from a rectangle to a circle and turning 90 degrees.

Noodling around with plans for the upstairs bathroom. Yes I *know* we're not even close to finished with the basement. But it would help to know where I should put the ducting and what areas we need to keep open for plumbing if I had an idea what the plan is for upstairs.

I don't want to put this in the current discourse, but I think it's fine for even very young teens to interact with adults without direct parental involvement. There should be kids in Discords. There should be kids in MMOs. There should be kids here on BlueSky. That's not the problem.

Workers
This is a parable. There was never a vineyard, never any workers hired at dawn, nor at any of the subsequent hours. There was never a disgruntled crowd upset that others were being paid the same for less work. It's a story that Jesus is telling in order to explore certain kinds of ideas with his followers. It's also an exaggerated, almost caricatured story so that we can see the contrasts.

As part of my trip to Waterloo this summer, I met up with a whole bunch of old classmates. It was a pretty simple event overall. We hung out in a park for an afternoon with lots of time to chat and catch up. I was a little surprised at the number of people who managed to come with several people even flying long distances to be there.

Last night at the "meet the teacher" event for my eldest child, the school helpfully let us know that they could set up meetings for our kids with the "school liaison officer" of the local police. I don't understand why a parent would want that.

Suddenly we talking about forgiveness. Last week the gospel passage was that part of Matthew 18 with the procedure for confronting sin in the community of believers. I'm sure we're all aware of some of the negative effects of clinging to that procedure too closely. It ends with Jesus's remarkable declaration that he will be with his followers, even if they are scattered and without institutional power.

This electrical panel is permanently affixed to the wall slightly crooked. So I guess I'm building the wall crooked to match.
An electrical panel in a basement with exposed studs. The observant may note is on sideways.

You can't tell it's cooked from this angle.

Oh actually I have to tell this story on its own. We live on the boundary. Our lived community includes parts of both municipalities. Back in the spring there was a water-main leak. Garden hose quantities of water bubbling out of the street. Running into the storm sewers a couple blocks from us.

I've got a 14 year old asking questions about LGBTQ issues and the Bible. I'm ok with big general ideas, but I think he'd appreciate a more focused analysis of some of these verses. Anyone got recommendations for either books or web resources? ⚓ Must be trans inclusive.
