1/n Some time ago my colleague, excellent cook, and friend Ivan told me: "Cacio e pepe is the recipe that I screw up more often. Let's make a project studying systematically the physics of that sauce". Prepare to get cheesy, I'm glad to share the Cacio e paper preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2501.00536

one of the best hubble images ever
The star cluster Pismis 24 lies within the much larger emission nebula called NGC 6357, located about 8,000 light-years from Earth. The cluster is seen here above a small portion of the nebula. The gas below the stars glows through ionization caused by intense ultraviolet radiation from the massive young stars within the cluster. The strong radiation and stellar winds from from these blazing, blue-white stars also pushes the nebular material outward, creating one of many low-density bubbles within NGC 6357.

Perseverance has reached the rim of Jezero Crater!
The area of Mars Percy landed on. Jezero crater is on the far right. Jezero Crater zoomed in and showing the path of the rover up to the rim. A more detailed view of the path.A picture of the surface of Mars from the rover looking down into the crater.

A star is born. This is Herbig-Haro 211 (HH 211), a baby star beinf formed, spewing a bipolar jet travelling through interstellar space at supersonic speeds. The star itself is at the center, hidden behind a dark cloud of dust. 🔭 🧪
At the centre is a thin horizontal multi-coloured cloud tilted from bottom left to top right. At its centre is a dark brown cloud from which both outflows are spewing from. These outflows transition from colours of yellow/orange, to a light blue region, with prominent light pink features in the outer regions.

Image of a star that exploded 320 years ago: Cassiopeia A (Infrared + X ray). This image was presented on AAS Nova today as JWST revealed new features in it. 🔭 🧪
This image of the famous supernova remnant Cassiopeia A combines X-ray, optical, and infrared observations. The new infrared data from JWST revealed fascinating structures. Where stars are born. NIRCam image of Westerlund 2, a young star cluster. Processed by @thocarp.bsky.social www.flickr.com/photos/19746... 🔭 🧪
The NIRCam image reveals the intricate details of the Westerlund 2 star cluster. Glowing pillars of gas and dust, illuminated by the intense radiation from young, massive stars, dominate the scene. The image showcases the vibrant colors and textures of the nebula, highlighting the ongoing processes of star formation and stellar evolution.

The top panel shows a flat ring with a bright center in blue, even though it was taken in near infrared light. The bottom panel shows the same galaxy in visible light and shows a brighter and more expansive center against which the flat ring appears dark. Please see the explanation for more detailed information.

Few people even know about this; when people are asked in surveys how child mortality has changed the majority says it has stagnated or increased. If you consider that many don't know about humanity's biggest achievement, then it's not surprising that many are so pessimistic about our future.

A study in Scientific Reports analyzes an Egyptian ritual Bes-vase of the 2nd century BCE, revealing traces of Peganum harmala, Nimphaea nouchali var. caerulea, and a plant of the Cleome genus, all of which have psychotropic and medicinal properties. go.nature.com/3V4IRYr 🧪 🏺
