Well-installed heat pumps installed in the UK today achieve on average a 64% higher efficiency than those during the early trials 15 years ago. It is testament to the brilliant installers and to the technology getting better. More in our recent paper: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Based on the 11-year running mean (and on Earth's Energy Imbalance), the near-term rate of warming could turn out much higher than the linear 2010-2025 extrapolation. The next El Niño peak will be very informative for the rate of global warming, as @drjamesehansen.bsky.social points out:

NEW RESEARCH: UK heat pumps can perform far better than many think. Our analysis of HeatPumpMonitor.org data shows well-designed systems achieve ~40% higher efficiency than past trials (SCoP 3.86 vs 2.81), cutting bills (~£224/yr) and emissions. Open access: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

When I was getting our heat pump here, because of the twitter heatpump discourse, I was worried that our model was oversized, but found in practice that it actually performs very well! (It's well within @openenergymon.bsky.social's range of useful oversizing).

BEST PERFORMING HEAT PUMP in UK costs 3.8 pence per kWh to heat an older property (with solid brick walls) just using radiators. If the system was to use the @ovoenergy.bsky.social plus tarrif it would only cost 2.99 pence per kWh You can hear about it on the BetaTalk podcast
Logo of BetaTalk which is an award winning podcast which discusses renewable heating technologies such as solar thermal and heat pumps. The latest episode discusses the heat pump monitor site which monitors over 300 heat pump systems in the UK. These systems are both air source systems and ground source systems. The cheapest running system on the site is an Air to Air system installed in an enerPHit property.

Currently, the highest performing heat pump systems is achieving a seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) of five. This is also known as having a seasonal performance factor of five with a boundary of H4.

The system uses a Viessmann heat pump and only costs 3.8 pence to run per kWh using the Octopus Agile tarrif. If it was to use the new OVO energy tarrif it would run at 2.99 pence per kWh

Oh hold on, wait. It's open source. We offer **everyone** a free licence for PyPSA. That's the point. Everyone, regardless of background and means, should be able to model the transformation of their energy systems, see what the code is doing, and modify it if need be. github.com/pypsa/pypsa

A friend has used 40kWh of gas today to heat their house to an average temp of 19C which works out about 9.9kg of CO2 in emissions. Electricity in the NE is 7g CO2e/kWh today. Meaning to maintain our house at 21C today has cost 39.2g CO2e. It’s insane how much an #ASHP would reduce CO2 emissions.

Last month, heat pump installer Damon Blakemore hit a major goal: one of his installations clocked a seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) of 5. That means a 12-month average of 5kW heat for every 1kW electricity the device used. The first air source heat pump to do so on heatpumpmonitor.org.

For context, this means these heat pumps are running at an average of *390% efficiency*, and there’s a load of systems running at even higher efficiencies than that. (this is possible because heat pumps work by concentrating free diluted heat, even freezing temps, from the environment)

How well can heat pumps work when designed, installed and commissioned well? This is one of the main questions we are exploring with HeatpumpMonitor.org. There are now 64 systems with a year of data, averaging an SPF H4 of 3.9. Feel free to explore the data for each system on the site 🤓

The energy efficiency of our house combined with the power of an ASHP, solar PV and home battery storage is doing an amazing job so far this year. With 10months gone we have spent £814 on energy (elec + standing charge) and earned £555 in FiTs. So net cost to us = £259 (all in) so for Jan-Oct.
