Here's today's column on the astonishing, ongoing mistreatment of people with #ME/CFS. Please spread it far and wide: the only thing which can break the media's wall of indifference is seeing an article about the issue go viral. Thank you. 1/2 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Abandoned, dismissed and gaslighted: there is no excuse for the way ME sufferers have been betrayed | George Monbiot
Changes in guidance and science seem to have little impact on millions of devastated lives. It’s a social crisis playing out behind closed doors, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

This is where framing the debate is so important. We have to take back terms like "productivity," so it means "making things that we need more of," not "making more things."

ICE has fallen out of the headlines but July marked the largest number of migrant detentions ever on record. Five migrants have died in ICE custody in the last two months. It's also currently impossible to legally migrate to this country, as 100% of visa applications have been paused.

I've spent the last year-ish fighting (and losing the battle against) the integration of "AI" into my workplace. I'm technically an org "leader" but outnumbered and essentially alone on this (and other issues) so I've begged them to read what I share and consider the consequences, etc. etc.

A very brief stop in Reykjavik last week on my way home from almost two weeks of work in London. I didn't see much, but I did see this.
Rainbow Street in Reykjavik (shop-lined street painted in rainbow colors) on a gray, rainy day. There are benches and small trees along both sides of the street and it looks like it's closed to cars.

theres a very specific reason at play beyond bigotry too which is that if you constantly place the blame for cocking up he country on the one demographic that had basically no say in any of it, you thereby exonerate your main audience of rancid walruses that signed up to be told theyre blameless

The Far Right riot in Belfast last night was nothing less than “a race-based pogrom”, Belfast MP and leader of the SDLP Claire Hanna said. The mob hunted down non-whites and set fire to their homes. Carl Whyte, a local councillor, called it “a hard Far Right element”.

And like, yes, I agree, we need someone (really lots of someones) to re-invigorate a protest tax withholding movement, but can we also agree it shouldn't be you?!

I haven't been to Illumination Night since high school, when it was mostly a night to get wasted and stumble around the Smith campus and ooh aah at the pretty lanterns. It's still just as lovely, middle aged and sober.
A path at night, illuminated by brightly colored candle-lit lanterns on both sides. A path at night, heading downhill, with brightly colored candle-lit lanterns along one side and in the distance the lanterns snake around the path at the bottom of the hill.

They're selling "hot priests" calendars at all the souvenir shops in Rome. I somehow failed to get a photo of the "hot priests holding cats/kittens" version I saw in one lucky shop, but these two were everywhere.
The exterior door of a souvenir shop selling Rome
themed tote bags, a calendar with a photo of Pope Leo on the front, one with a photo of the Pantheon that says "Roma," and two calendars with photos of hot looking priests - dark hair, winsome smiles on their young and their very symmetrical faces - on the front.

The fact that Mamdani just seems like a cheerful normal guy who's policies are things like "we're going to tax second homes to fund pothole repairs" or whatever and yet this generates panicked responses like "This is basically Stalin's great purge turned up to eleven" is... telling. It tells things.

The trope that associates violent profiteering by elites and their henchmen with being “tough on crime” was pushed by both right wing and liberal media organizations for decades. It is one of the great achievements of modern propaganda to associate cruelty and domination and violence with “safety.”

The international crime lord running this country calling the Pope “weak on crime” is hilarious on so many levels. The harm both parties have wrought with that phrase is stunning, and maybe this is overly optimistic, but I swear he just de-fanged it in one inane social media post.

I have had this talk with my son. And it’s personal. One of my first summer jobs was patrolling paddle boats on a pond and instead of making sure people didn’t stand up in their boats, I spent the summer protecting a family of Canada goslings with my canoe paddle from the swan trying to kill them.
