Today, Lifeboat Saturday, I’d like to pay tribute to the many brave men and women who volunteer for the #RNLI, risking their lives to save others in grave danger. I’m appalled at the abuse and intimidation faced by RNLI crews in recent weeks. Let’s support and celebrate this incredible charity.

Sorry to hear that. My main breast cancer legacies include that it’s difficult to lie on my front because of a lumpy scar where the abscess was, and I think my hormones are still all over the place! Others have had far worse than me though. Agree with your sentiments.

What does it mean to recover from Long Covid? Here in the @bmj.com from a few weeks ago, Charlie Dennis, a final year student and @nisreenalwan.bsky.social write about how we’ve still not got a good definition of this, and that is hampering progress. Link: www.bmj.com/content/393/... #MedSky
Except from BMJ article:

Defining recovery is essential for research, clinical care, and patient experience, say Charlie Dennis and Nisreen A Alwan

If you have long covid, how can you tell if you have fully recovered? Six years of evidence and collective lived experience show us that this is not an easy question to answer. Yet if we do not define recovery, we cannot properly count the number of people living with long covid, and its present and future impact on the population’s wellbeing, economic productivity, and health systems.

Long covid remains a substantial global health problem. A recent report estimated that this condition will cost countries in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) $11bn (£8.3bn; €9.6bn) a year in healthcare costs over the next decade. The projected economic costs are $135bn a year.Second page of article.

You are absolutely right. Having worked in the NHS for four decades, we remain spectacularly bad at treating and caring for people with #mecfs and in fact many long term conditions that medical science doesn’t fully understand. #MedSky

I think @scarlettmcnally.bsky.social is right in her assessment here. Promoting walking for everyone is a good thing, but is this really the best way to get everyone more active? From the @bmj.com back in the summer, but I’m just catching up now. Link: www.bmj.com/content/394/... #MedSky
Excerpt:

NHS England recently announced plans to launch a new incentive scheme that will reward people who achieve 30 minutes of walking a day, adding up to a “marathon in a month.” I see several weaknesses in this plan.

A quarter of the adult population do less than 30 minutes of exercise in a whole week. This is the group who stand to gain the biggest health improvements from any exercise, but they are unlikely to start doing 30 minutes of walking every day. I worry that the new incentive, and the funding, effort, and media outreach behind it, will attract only the people who are active already, further widening health inequalities.

Evidence suggests that incentive schemes lead to minimal long term behaviour change, so this scheme won’t tackle deep rooted cultural and behavioural determinants of inactivity. There is a science to behaviour change. Capability, opportunity, and motivation are required to change behaviour. A third of adults claim that they don’t have the opportunity to be active because of time constraints, safety concerns, or where they live.

Under financial capitalism, profit is the prime directive. But care is too labor-intensive to be profitable at the level of compensation needed for sustainability. And it can't be easily automated at the level of quality required for human needs.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

Being pro-the UK joining the EU and being pro-EU are not the same thing. The challenge for UK leaders is to turn the former shallow preference of the population into the latter deeper sentiment & belief. Then the UK can convince the rest of Europe that it would be a force for the good of the EU.

As long as the Tories are threatening to leave the ECHR, they aren’t a serious party. Consider it the ultimate red flag. Any party who’d take this entirely unnecessary and ruinous risk with our rights and our country’s security and wellbeing should never get its hands on power. (Letter, Times)
Value of the
ECHR
Sir, In dangerous times, serious countries do not retreat into splendid isolation. They build alliances, multiply their influence and strengthen institutions. Key among those is the 46-member Council of Europe, at its heart the European Convention on Human Rights. As former independent reviewers of terrorism legislation we have seen at close quarters that the ECHR is not just a human rights instrument. It is a national security asset. Terrorist networks, hostile states, organised crime gangs and people smugglers do not respect borders. Tackling them requires arrangements for the closest possible co-operation with our neighbours, including through joint investigations and police access to European passenger, fingerprint, DNA and vehicle data. These arrangements expressly depend on internationally agreed human rights standards, applied by a supranational court. We detect no political willingness to excuse the UK from compliance with standards to which the rest of Europe already subscribes. As authoritarian powers grow more aggressive and democratic institutions face mounting pressure, Britain should not be abandoning one of its greatest postwar achievements.
The question is not whether we can afford to remain within the ECHR. It is whether, in an increasingly perilous world, we can afford not to.
