#Booksky Spooktacular Day 2: Imagine the anxiety of going to a friend’s wedding where your ex will be a guest (along with his new partner). Now imagine you’re stuck in a loop, repeating that day. Oh, and each time, you and everyone else dies in increasingly bizarre ways… 1/2

It’s time for the #Booksky 2026 Spooktacular! Day 1 belongs to @craigdilouie.bsky.social’s The Summer Fun Massacre, where a detective story meets a slasher for a killer thriller that still has space for explorations of grief, trauma, and old loves. (Plus it’s getting a sequel soon!)
Cover of The Summet Fun Massacre by Craig DiLouie, designed to look like an old VHS cover bearing the image of a cabin in the woods and a bloodstained wooden sign bearing the novel’s title.

Once you understand the corporate culture of AI hyperscalers is everyone cooking their brains by locking themselves in the bathroom, holding flashlights under their chins, and saying "Aaaaaaaaaay Eyeeeeeee" until they wet themselves in terror, things snap into focus: pluralistic.net/2023/06/04/a...
A cutaway view of a stone tower containing an elaborate water-powered medieval geared machine. Rising out of the machine is a rainbow-tinted, pixelated God with the robes, beard and all. To one side of this scene is a cluster of tiny people in Jesus-era robes, falling about themselves in religious ecstasy all over a stone staircase, atop of which stands a robed priest with his hands upraised. The background is a set of shining golden rays, emanating from pixel-God.

We need to start writing near-future science fiction that refers back to a period in the past known only as 'The Last Days of the Billionaires'. There'd be no obligation to explain what happened to them, just that it was historically inevitable. Let us create the expectation of world without them.

Preaching to the Choir, the new @aptshadow.bsky.social novella, is for anyone who’s seen that the richest people are Not Like Us. It’s got the creeping dread of a great horror movie, one Tchaikovsky’s Big Ideas at its center, and is paced beautifully. I read it in two greedy sittings. #Booksky

In the summer of 2013, two esoteric, technical, incredibly important texts were published within weeks of one another: the first is the Snowden leaks, which revealed a system of global, pervasive digital surveillance. 1/
"Eugène Delacroix's painting 'La Liberté guidant le peuple' ('Liberty Leading the People'), depicting the French revolution as a ragtag group of peasants led by a flag-waving, bare-breasted incarnation of 'Liberty.' The painting has been altered: the scene is now being observed with a giant, smoke-shrouded CCTV dome, and the distant building have been replaced with a mainframe computer.

Hey #Booksky, Vow of Ashes just might be @ddalglish.com’s best work yet, an emotionally raw and deeply moving story about dignity in death and the nature of commitment. It’s remarkable how much of a punch it packs into so small a page count. Read it, and have some tissues handy. 100% recommended!

This has always been the case. “Go Woke, Get Broke” has always been clownish untruth. No movie has ever failed because of Black folks, POC, LQBTQ+, or women. There are a myriad of other reasons why some movies fail to connect. But bigoted chuds don’t have that kind of power.

There's plenty of reasons to be skeptical of centrists who bemoan "political polarization" and call for a politics that abandons the "tribalism of left and right." 1/
The icy chamber at the center of Dante's hell, dominated by Satan, massive and peering around with his chin propped on his elbows, which rest of the ice-sheet. From the ceiling of the chamber dangles a massive, decapitated head, suspended by the hair. Beneath it is a pile of corpses in middle ages armor. On the opposite side of the chamber stands a suburban housing plot; another group of (living) soldiers in armour aim a giant catapult at it.
