Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 07/10/2026This is always on a bunch of gateway horror lists, but it wasn’t on my radar as a kid. Might’ve been a good thing. It’s gateway in the way The Sixth Sense is gateway…it’s not, haha. It’s a step beyond. Chilled me even now. Wonderful film. Might be Alex Rocco’s best performance. 4252

Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Very good! Would’ve been obsessed with it as a kid but for some reason I missed it. Has similar vibes to Return to Oz. Beautiful work by Jim Henson. Anjelica Houston is having a blast. That painting scene, and Luke’s first encounter with a witch in his treehouse are so alarming. 1280

Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I was amused. It’s goofy and Grohl is kinda the only one giving himself over to acting without being self-conscious. 15 minutes too long and the third act is slapdash but it’s a good time and gore has a cool homemade look. Crazy that Hawkins died like a month after this released. 1111

Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 28/09/2026We have to raise boys to be better. Whether that’s as fathers, uncles, brothers, teachers, or whatever formative role we play as men to boys. This Cornell rape goes beyond an understanding consent but understanding a masculine culture that must be eradicated from an early age. 15214
Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Quite fun! More testicle popping than I expected. Clear 90s thriller influence. Obv similarities w/Companion+ Obsession, but derivative material has never hindered horror in the grand scheme. Shame about the release dates for this and M3GAN 2.0 -A.I. panic horror feels necessary. 2150
Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Really enjoyed the book when I read it. The movie? Not so much. It feels so insubstantial and lacking in style, personality, and cast chemistry. Even in expecting a surface level adaptation of the novel, I at least expected it to be fun. It was not. 3160
Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 23/09/2026I know that dying in Saros is part of the experience but I feel like…I’m dying too much, too early into the game? Lol. 2121
Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Gnarly fun. I love a horror film set, either partly or fully, in the tube. Just a great space for panic and havoc. Sean Harris great. The lead Kate though, she would be one of the all time worst final girls to be partnered up with. Just entirely inept and gets a brother killed. 0110
Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 21/09/2026It’s fine. Entertaining enough, occasionally frustrating, PG-13 slasher with a supernatural twist. Feels like it would’ve been on Freeform a decade ago. It definitely has a target of younger viewers, though making it a $15 rental rather than a “free” Peacock original hampers that a bit. 0100
Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 20/09/2026A hoot and a half! Cregger borrows a bit of Carpenter, bit of Henenlotter, lotta Yuzna, and a healthy dose of the game series’ identity to create a creepy creature feature that recontextualizes the “monster” with humor and earnestness. Wolski! A film bursting with personality. 3579
Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 19/09/2026A gory and pulpy B-movie set on Halloween that’s very in line with what Lionsgate was releasing at the time. Michael Fassbender plays a Nazi occultist. Henry Cavill and Dom Purcell play brothers, and Shea Whigham, one of the guys, is in it. Fun, but a less ambitious Schumacher. 4211
Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Tight, solid little thriller. Nothing fancy but some really strong tension, especially in the first act with car stalking scenario. Honestly, I could’ve watched an entire film of just the road games. 1151
Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Eerie and particularly mean little eco-terror with a final 30 minutes that had me sweating. If you’ve never been afraid of a sea cow, you will be. You will be. Incredible atmosphere. Their weekend was, quite frankly, fucked. Australians always on some next level horror shit. 1282

Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 15/09/2026“Skin to skin.” I quite liked this. Handsomely made with a great score by Colin Stetson. It does get a little predictable (though it’s thematically justifiable), and there’s some real stupid cop behavior in the third act but it’s held together by terrific performances. 0130

Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 08/09/2026Really dug this. Does a whole lot with a very small budget and it genuinely creeped me out. James Ross II’s direction reminded me of early Wan, though he also brings his own flavor and authenticity to the script. Hope more folks check this out on @shudder.com Ross II is one to watch. 1243

Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Fun buddy flick! It lightly, but directly, sticks a corkscrew into the jingoist propaganda of both the USSR and the USA, without sacrificing its optimism. Branagh is great and plays well off of Reynolds who (enjoyably) does his Reynolds thing. Another win for Goldstein and Daley. 2220

Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 06/09/2026This was pretty damn awesome. A defense attorney takes on the case of an accused man who turns out not to be a man at all. Legal thriller meets folk horror. Never got a theatrical release outside of Japan, but it’s well worth a rental or purchase. Pair it with Afflicted (2013). 1241
Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Liked it. It has great vibes and yes, very Carpenter-inspired. Although for me it felt like something was missing. Would’ve liked to have gotten to know the trailer park residents more. Reginald VelJohnson MVP. Fun, but I get the mixed reactions. Didn’t scratch my Guest 2 itch. 0221
Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 05/09/2026“I’m a friend of the family.” 😏 Haven’t revisited this in about a decade and friends, let me tell you, it still fuckin riiips. Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Dug this! The first film is a masterpiece and while the sequel doesn’t hit the same height it’s an impressively unconventional sequel that actively strays away from repeating the same beats with an allegory that’s less specific but tragic in its own right. Tatiana Maslany looks like a baby. 3192

Richard Newby @richardlnewby.bsky.social · 22/08/2026The production design is quite nice, though there’s little interest in allowing the camera to take it in. Gary Oldman has fun playing a ham sandwich. But it’s a real slog of movie that isn’t nearly as much fun as it should be. 1110
