Wild— Mohsen Mahdawi asked Columbia to publicly admit what they did privately: that he & other students were not "threatening"—and that he in fact *confronted* an antisemitic disruptor. They ignored him. Weeks later, the Trump admin cited Columbia's own unretracted lie to justify arresting Mohsen.
The State Department cited "threatening rhetoric and intimidation" to target Mahdawi, without elaborating. The same phrasing was cited by Columbia, when it suspended the school's Jewish Voice for Peace and Students for Justice in Palestine chapters, after a November 2023 rally.
At said rally, there was indeed an antisemitic disruptor - who Mahdawi himself confronted.
Columbia privately walked back the characterization - but has refused to do so publicly. It has since been cited in Congress, in reference to campus antisemitism warranting crackdowns.

Mahdawi raised the issue in his emails to administrators. In one email, dated Feb. 16, 2025, he recounted a meeting when one of the recipient officials "acknowledged" that Mahdawi had denounced the antisemitic disruptor. He asked Columbia to issue a statement clarifying facts about the incident. While administrators replied, responding to other points Mahdawi brought up, they did not address the request to publicly clarify the truth. Mahdawi followed up again.
"What makes this specific incident different from the ones the university has publicly disclosed? This was an event that took place on campus while the gates were closed, involved students, and involved the presence of Public Safety and the NYPD. What criteria determine whether an incident warrants a public response?"
The administrators did not respond.
Mahdawi followed up again weeks later, one day after Khalil's arrest. No response.
Two months later, the Trump administration detained Mahdawi.

Of course the jackass has no comment. The thing about both Mohsen and Mahmoud is that they did everything by the book. Their faces weren’t covered, they repeated again and again their hate for all hate, including antisemitism. They spoke to people who disagreed with them. They took the best of us.
In December 2023, Mahdawi asked Columbia professor Shai Davidai, a controversial pro-Israel figure at the school, to get coffee. The two met, but Mahdawi later said that Davidai left in the
middle of the coffee. Less than two months after the meeting, Davidai posted a video of Mahdawi to Twitter in a thread
characterizing him and other protest organizers as antisemitic and pro-Hamas.
(Davidai did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)

The Trump admin has just detained Mohsen Mahdawi, who: –has green card –was Columbia Buddhist club president –saw his best friend shot & killed by Israeli soldier –said "we are against antisemitism because antisemitism is a form of injustice, and injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"
In addition to violating Mr. Mahdawi’s First Amendment rights, the Rubio
Determination and Mr. Mahdawi’s unlawful detention also violates Mr. Mahdawi’s statutory rights
and due process rights.
PARTIES
8. Petitioner Mohsen Mahdawi is a Palestinian who was born and raised in a refugee
camp in the West Bank. He is a lawful permanent resident of the United States and has been for
the last ten years. He is a recent student of Columbia University, with an expected graduation date
of May 2025. He has been admitted to a Master’s program at Columbia University’s School of
International and Public Affairs (“SIPA”), to begin in the fall of 2025.After growing up in a refugee camp, Mr. Mahdawi felt compelled to advocate for
Palestinian human rights upon moving to the United States.
22. Mr. Mahdawi is also a committed Buddhist and believes in non-violence and
empathy as a central tenet of his religion. In fall of 2021, he became the president of the Columbia
University Buddhist Association and led it for two years.
23. In fall of 2023, Mr. Mahdawi co-founded the Palestinian Student Union (“Dar”) at
Columbia University which “serves to engage with and celebrate Palestinian culture, history, and
identity.” Mr. Mahdawi co-founded this organization with Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian lawful
permanent resident who was also recently detained by ICE for his expressive conduct related to
Palestine. Mr. Mahdawi appeared in numerous televised interviews and print news articles
regarding the military campaign in Gaza and related protests. In December of 2023, Mr. Mahdawi
appeared on 60 Minutes where he shared that, as a child, he watched an Israeli soldier shoot and
kill his best friend in the West Bank.
27. Throughout his time as a student and a leader of Dar and the Columbia University
Buddhist Association, Mr. Mahdawi was always willing to engage in dialogue with people whose
views and beliefs differed from his own. Mr. Mahdawi believed, and continues to believe, that
more speech is the solution to disagreement, rather than less, and that empathy and understanding
through communication are a way to resolve conflicts peacefully.…and a peaceful political solution. Mr. Mahdawi gave speeches at several of these protests. In his
speeches, Mr. Mahdawi advocated for Palestinian human rights, a permanent ceasefire, and a
peaceful resolution that affirmed the human dignity of all.
25. During one protest, Mr. Mahdawi vocally denounced an unaffiliated passerby who
made an antisemitic comment, chanting “shame on him”. Mr. Mahdawi stated that “we are against

A US-born citizen was walking near Chicago in January. ICE snatched him off the street, handcuffed him, threw into a van. His wallet, which contained his ID, was confiscated. He was detained for 10 hours before being released without a record of what occurred. immigrantjustice.org/sites/defaul...
A screenshot from a court filing reads, in part:

"Julio Noriega is 54 years old, was born in Chicago, and is a U.S. citizen.

On January 31, 2025, he was walking near the corner of Cermak Road and Harlem Avenue in Berwyn, Illinois, handing out his resume to local businesses.

As he walked out of a Jiffy Lube, he was approached by ICE officers who grabbed and handcuffed him and put him into a van, without an opportunity to explain his citizenship.

The officers drove Julio and others around for more than an hour before bringing him to an ICE processing center, where he remained, still handcuffed, for several more hours.

All the while, Julio had a wallet containing identification that ICE had confiscated.

The officers never showed Julio a warrant, and they did not ask him any questions to ascertain whether he was a noncitizen or a flight risk.

After about 10 hours, ICE officers reviewed the contents of Julio’s
wallet, realized he was a U.S. citizen, and released him with no money and no paperwork."
