Pleased to be featured in this “If I Were Mayor” campaign. Democratic convos often focus on what cities lack, fear, or need to repair. While some of those conversations are important, I also believe we need more ambitious and aspirational conversations for co-creating cities for all.

NEW POSTER: The Road Lobby loves when it’s hard for us to walk or bike to school, work, to get a coffee or some milk. Their profit depends on it. On everything far away, on car dependency, on convenience and choice being illegal. #UrbanTruth #1HourCityConspiracy

How come they keep spelling “open” wrong? Does that street look closed to you? Only if you’re a car… and presumably that’s the real problem. #UrbanTruth

The 15-minute city is often presented as convenience. It is, in fact, about access. Access to jobs, services, and opportunity, especially for those who have the least. If inclusion is not at the core, proximity alone is not progress. Thank you UN-Habitat for sharing this image

Paris’ hostile streets have found new life as Mayor Anne Hidalgo bravely transformed it from a city for passing through to a city for passing time. She faced fierce criticism but ultimately found broad support for her ambitious introduction of cycle lanes, pedestrian streets, and public transport. 🧵

Millions of American voters wanted to be villains. They came to believe it’s the key to success, while goodness is weak, woke, loser stuff, done only to signal. Offered the option of unvarnished villainy, they enthusiastically took it. Seeing others suffer more made them feel big. And here we are.

One of the most successful pedestrian streets in the world, the Strøget in Copenhagen, was filled with cars until a 2 year pedestrianization pilot project in 1962. The opposition argued “no cars means no business,” but the street has been a massive retail success, the city’s busiest shopping street.

Dr. Wesley nails it: "If there’s a problem, it’s not that judges exist. It’s that populists don’t like being told “no.”" We don't elect kings/queens. The same system that gives power to Premiers gives it to our courts to protect us. Democracy isn’t mob rule. And the UCP don't like that. #ableg

Bus priority infrastructure in Asian cities always stuns me. Our electric bus (that runs every 10 minutes) is speeding down a center running bus lane. It’s a ~40 minute ride to dinner and I’m seriously enjoying it.

Here’s something that’s really important for everyone to understand. If we design our cities just for cars, they fail everyone, including drivers. If we design our cities with many great CHOICES in how to get around, they work better for everyone, including drivers. Spread the word.

What strikes me the most during a Friday evening rush hour in Delft Netherlands is just how pleasant the noises are compared to the loud cars and motorcycles back home. You can actually hear people talking, birds chirping, and bikes rhythmically wheeling over the cobblestones. Much less stressful!!

This iconic Fabian Todorovic cartoon is still one of the best I’ve seen at illustrating the remarkable amount of space we surrender to cars, leaving little space left for everyone and everything else. The text added later makes the bonus point that many drivers still manage to complain about it.

Montréal knows how to create pedestrian streets that engage the 10s of 1000s of people using them every day. They make them playful, fun places that people want to visit. No hostile furniture here! What a boon to the small local shops, restaurants, and bars that line these summer streets!!

If we’re being honest, the biggest threat to urban livability isn’t density or height. It’s the noise, danger, pollution, and wasted space that comes from prioritizing cars above all other modes of transport.
