I lost my cat at 21 last year. Around the time she was 18 I had the terrible realization that she wasn't just going to die in her sleep. I think I came close to choosing the right time, and I think 80% of my grief was about having to do it.

If you're brave you don't need a neti pot, you can just hold a bowl of warm saltwater to your nose and inhale. It'll end up in your mouth and you spit.

But seriously, the shift from "we love to entertain!" on 2000s HGTV is jarring and I've noticed it. And I don't necessarily object. Hosting is fraught, and why?

Such an interesting article. I've just learned that people don't want to eat someone's home cooking. Everyone would rather eat restaurant food. People love to have control.

The dreadful decline of hosting at home: ‘I feel shame any time a friend comes over’
It used to be quite normal to pop next door for a coffee or invite friends over for dinner. But not any more. What’s behind this change – and just how damaging is it?

Not keen on advertising auctions, but couldn't resist this one. Assorted bindings for a set of three volumes in modern Greek (Venice 1819). Nice example of manuscript recycling in the 19th century, a topic on which I have been working lately... (but shouldn't mention it here) alde.fr/ventes/livre...

Before I was completely done with that university the psychology library was absorbed into the main library and closed. They did a human chain to move the books. I took pictures and felt sad.

On a rainy Saturday morning early in my undergraduate career, I went to the psychology library and had one of the nicest times of my life. Read about how to make shrunken heads, how to implant electrodes into cat brains, and Oliver Sacks' book on migraine.

Absolutely LOVE the floral initials in this copy of the works of Apuleius, one of the first books printed at Rome (by Sweynheym & Pannartz) in 1469. The initials apparently added in France, perhaps in the 1480s or 90s. @theulspeccoll.bsky.social Inc.2.B.2.1[1124].

The graveslab known as 'The Brethren', in Jerpoint Abbey Kilkenny, is particularly interesting as it is one of very few incised graveslabs to depict knights in Ireland. #Ireland #Medieval #SpéirGhorm
A grey stone graveslab that has incised portraits of a knight in a helmet holding a sword (on the left), his head reclines on a pillow. A second knight in mail but no helmet holds a sword to the right

I think, after I'm done with chores and homework, I'll curl up with a Mary Berry book and make notes about more freezer casseroles to put up. Her beef casserole with mustard & horseradish is a banger, esp if you up the mustard and horseradish. I'll get to it.

Magical creatures don’t exist, eh? Roughly 400 million years ago, before the birth of trees, there were giant mystery cones called “Prototaxites,” which grew nearly 30 feet tall. We literally have no idea what they were. Plant: no Mushroom: no Animal: no Tell me this isn’t a little bit magic

Two Satyrs www.wikiart.org/en/peter-paul-ruben…
"Two Satyrs" by Peter Paul Rubens depicts two mythological creatures, characterized by their expressive features and dynamic poses, skillfully illustrating the vivacious and hedonistic spirit of satyrs from classical mythology. The painting highlights Rubens' mastery of texture and light, serving as a prime example of Baroque art's exuberance and vitality.

Fabulous fragment of an ancient Egyptian wall relief with three bears and an oil jar. The paint has survived some 4,500 years! Limestone relief from the Pyramid Temple of Sahure, Old Kingdom, 5th Dynasty, c. 2496-2483 BC. Neues Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #ReliefWednesday #Archaeology
My photo shows a circa 4,500-year-old limestone relief with some well-preserved paint in places, from the funerary temple of Sahure at Abusir, measuring 39 × 35 × 8.5 cm. It shows three bears (partial view only) and a tall one-handled pottery vessel, across two registers. The upper register at left, shows the two leds and hindquarters of a bear, and at right, a bear’s lowered head, chest, and foreleg, painted mid-brown. The lower register at left shows a tall, dark-reddish-brown pottery vessel with a long neck and single handle, and at right, the lowered head, neck, shoulder, and top of foreleg of a dark-brown bear. The bears wear collars tethered by ropes to looped fixtures in the ground. The fragment comes from a wall scene depicting tributes from the Levant. Bears were not native to Egypt. The bears represented are Syrian brown bears (Ursus arctos syriacus), which were quite common in Levantine mountain regions in antiquity. They were kept as exotic animals in enclosures by Egyptian kings, and also hunted.
