Since I dusted off my social tonight, I wonder if anyone around here likes to think about student work in math like we used to via #mtbos and #iteachmath on the bird app? If anyone's up for it, I would LOVE to know what questions you might ask these two different students. Both new 5th graders.

I think there was a reason behind the IM change of WODB to “which three go together” and I wanted to give it a chance to be just the same but it’s not. Harder to write down student thinking, more difficult to ensure that all the different pictures are addressed. #ITeachMath

This shift to computerized state tests was made possible by schools' adoption of one-to-one devices. Which mostly happened with Covid. And yet, we rarely discuss the possibility that computerizing tests--without first teaching computing skills--might've contributed to subsequent test score declines.

Goddamnit, I hate the positioning of education as workforce preparation and the path to individual wealth. People need good, dignified jobs with economic security and material resources. AND. People need access to the arts, sciences, music, humanities, mathematics, and literature.

According to estimates, nearly half of graduate programs in fields like art, music, theater, and dance would fail the test. If a program loses federal loan eligibility, many students may no longer be able to afford to attend, forcing them to transfer, switch majors, or leave school.

The Department of Education is finalizing a rule that would judge college programs based on how much money graduates make after leaving school. Programs whose graduates don’t earn enough compared to their student debt would lose access to federal student loans.

#ITeachMath, I'm confused about grades 3 & 4 Common Core geometry expectations. By my reading, angles, (including special angles) and parallel/perpendicular lines are both 4th grade standards. Yet 3rd graders seem expected to ID special quadrilaterals by right angles & parallel sides. Any advice?

It's school board budget season in the U.S.! I'm listening in on the board in a neighboring Maine town that's looking at a 14% annual increase in health policy premiums. That's the range I keep seeing: 10-15% increases in health care premiums year-over-year. That's INSANE and UNSUSTAINABLE.
