Abstract Now ubiquitous in Western Europe, the idea of the “return of war” (Heisbourg, 2021; Marangé, 2026) betrays a perspective that pays little heed to the wars waged elsewhere in recent decades...

7. "some people find LLMs useful" is a different claim than any of the following: a) LLMs are good at doing the things people use them for b) LLMs are well suited to the tasks for which they are advertised c) LLMs "can do" something

That's good, because they've been inundating HASS this week! I evicted 10+ from my office today, and they're all over the building.

That was the one that irked me as well, and stood out first when I scrolled past it. The more you look at the others, the more you see. But that one is particularly problematic.

Nicole Townsend @townsend-nic.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
A basic check should've identified the problems, but maybe, just maybe, we should be using actual imagery of a beautiful place to promote tourism? There's no shortage of stunning photography from local artists to promote the nation's capital. This is what the Commemorative Area actually looks like.

Nicole Townsend @townsend-nic.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
And then there's the Australian War Memorial's distinctive commemorative area. The eternal flame is missing. The Pool of Reflection is too wide. The garden beds/trees are wrong. The cloisters are reduced to slight openings or seemingly absent. Stairs are in the wrong spot or missing.

What's the spire-thing in the city centre? Why is the facade of Parliament and its forecourt different? Where did the pier in Lake Burley Griffin come from? Where is the rest of Canberra as the hikers look towards Black Mountain?

Nicole Townsend @townsend-nic.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
How good is Canberra? Good enough to not use AI imagery to promote it. This image was posted by a tourism industry body to promote Canberra on World Tourism Day. The problem? AI has clearly been used, and the photos aren't accurate. The more you look, the more you notice.

If we let the current crop of "AI" people stay in charge, we are not gonna make it; not because of "superintelligent AI," but because of what the MIT study terms "cognitive surrender": offloading and deterioration of critical skills. And it increasingly feels like that's exactly what they want.

This was one of the two we saw, and I was the same, though I hadn't seen them before this. We'd hiked all the way there from Mt Cook and around the park, so it was quite exciting seeing them so close given there aren't many there to begin with.

I was fortunate to see two takahē at Zealandia when I was last in Wellington. I'd just finished saying to my partner that I wanted to see them most, then turned the corner to find two chilling on the path we were on. Such cool birds.

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

The conclusion is NOT "we need to debias LLMs" Besides that it's impossible, it also detracts from the point, which is: We shouldn't use machines to offload of the very cognition that is constitutive of the work to be done & supercharge existing inequities and injustices in the process. 🧵

Each paper should be no longer than 15 minutes to leave sufficient time for discussion.
Individual paper proposals must include a paper title, a 300-word abstract of the paper,

Panel proposals must include a panel title and 300-word abstract summarizing the
theme of the panel; a paper title and a 300-word abstract for each proposed paper

CfP. The conference organisers will make a decision on the final programme by 31st

I always reverse park where I can (very few exceptions). It's safer (esp. with yank tanks blocking your view coming out of a front-in park), and it takes me less than 5 seconds in most cases. The issue is that most people don't know how to capably reverse *or* front-in park—screqed either way.
