They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I tell people all the time that I got lucky with my career and it annoys a lot of them. "No, but you're good," they will say, and I will say, yes, I am good, and also here are all these people who write as well as I do but did not get the same break, so being good isn't the issue, being lucky is.

It feels so much like an enthusiastic toddler offering to "help" -- but a total stranger toddler who just wandered into your house, entirely lacks cuteness, and refuses to leave. (And obviously the so-called help is the opposite of helpful.)

thank you for this thread! i had an off-the-cuff comic turned into a meme and it's such a weird feeling that my art is just being spread out there without any credit here's a version with my name on it, im fine with people using that one :)
Six panel comic. In the first panel, a guy says, "I don't like thing". Then, a heavenly light shines on him and an angel descends. The angel hands him a note and flies away again. In the last panel, we see the note just says, "OK".

On Sunday a fish & chips server asked in an astonished way if I was actually going to read the book I had with me. The kind of thing that might discourage you as a writer if you weren't so incredibly stubborn.

99% of the time I think "I could never be a poet," but maybe I should try harder? (I hope this comes out the right way. To me it's like when I first realised I could do what the rhythm guitarist in a live band was doing -- it's very empowering! Truly a gift from the artist who inspires it.)
