How to avoid using inappropriate stock photos of trains
This week I stumbled across a story in the Bruxelles EU publication Rapporteur, arguing for a "rail revolution in Poland", illustrated using a Russian Railways RZD Sapsan train: I am pretty sure, politically, you do not want RZD as part of your revolution! Earlier this week the TRAN Committee of

You could - at a stretch - imagine how #CrossChannelRail trains to London could depart Gleis 5 at Köln Hbf In this article - with loads of photos and plans - I explain how you could do it: jonworth.eu/trains-to-lond… Whether you would actually WANT to is rather harder to answer!

Trains to London from Gleis 5 at Köln Hbf? It's bold
The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger put out an intriguing article yesterday, stating that four trains a day could depart Köln Hbf for London in the 2030s, and this will be done from Gleis 5 (Platform 5) at the station, and passengers will get to the platform from a terminal building on

Hm, if it's the southern end, then Jon's drawing wouldn't work. The nearest pre-existing buildings from which to build the passenger bridge at the south end would be either the Cathedral or the Musical Dome. Admittedly, both have more than enough seat capacity to serve as a Eurostar terminal…

This is making Köln a lot worse, just to serve one more city that you can already reach by transferring in Brussels. Not sure that this is the best use of Köln Hbf's very limited footprint.

That seems both like the only practical way to do this and a horrible mistake at the same time. Removing a platform edge for two hours a day? Creating a train in Cologne that can only go to one specific track? Presumably permanent barriers along the platform with a limited number of doors?

The simple trick to tell the difference is that the real version has eight sides, and the IKEA one only has seven. This is very annoying if you have light OCD because there's no way to hold it exactly symmetrical because you always have an edge opposite a flat - which is also the case here.

Torsten @torstenkammer.bsky.social · 07/10/2026

Torsten @torstenkammer.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
www.elektrolokarchiv.de/index.php?na...

Torsten @torstenkammer.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Siehe www.elektrolokarchiv.de/index.php?na...
110
Torsten @torstenkammer.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
110
Torsten @torstenkammer.bsky.social · 07/10/2026

Make international rail cheaper? Capacity on a route is the crucial issue
It's a common refrain: more people would take the train - especially on international routes - if only it were cheaper! That line of argument assumes that there are actually more trains to take. In other words that there is spare capacity. The problem is that - in many cases - that is

Huh. Today in "always look up the etymology because sometimes you're just repeating a myth but sometimes it's weirder and more incredible than you could have possibly imagined" www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/c...
Screenshot of Merriam Webster etymology note for cockamamie:
By the look and sound of it, cockamamie (also spelled "cockamamy") could have something to do with a rooster and the outrageous sound it makes. But in fact, cockamamie is believed to be an altered form of the term decalcomania, which refers to the process, invented in the mid-19th century, of transferring pictures and designs from specially prepared paper to surfaces such as glass or porcelain. (The word referring to the picture or design itself, decal, is a shortening of decalcomania.) The word decalcomania comes from French, with décalcomanie combining the verb décalquer, meaning "to trace" or "to transfer by tracing," and -manie, meaning "-mania." Starting in the 1930s, painted strips of paper with images capable of being transferred to the skin were called decals or—in children's slang—cockamamies. Those familiar with today's temporary tattoos will understand quickly that these were regarded by many as silly novelties, lending the word cockamamie the necessary leeway for application to anything ridiculous.
