I've been spending a lot of time gritting my teeth and thinking of my halmoni, who was born into an occupied Korea in 1920, and lived to almost 100. She outlived a lot of dictators and other assholes, and raised 7 kids while she did it.

I don't know anybody that isn't a little bit broken, mentally or physically or both, from the pandemic. Our trust in systems and governments to protect us was broken and only continues to get shattered. Having to use our own blood and bone to make the future isn't a cute metaphor anymore

Even when characters talked about things like "the eugenics war" or nuclear conflict, it's all stuff that happens in the past, or to other people. Our protagonists are almost always hale, whole-bodied, and blithe, with an amazing trust in systems that shoot them literally through empty space.
