If you have a rabies vaccine skeptic in your life, you should sit them down and show them videos of rabid animals. Start with wildlife and end with humans dying of rabies. Do it every day until they get a restraining order or vaccinate their pets

In my teens, I noticed that elder care was constantly bemoaned. So I asked my parents (both in healthcare) if it used to be better. They gave a hollow laugh. That unfortunate home stretch isn't pleasant. But it was never better, and it's the bit of life that's improved the most over my lifetime.

The money is obviously nothing. But it's probably non-trivial to actively insert Government-sized money into this system that works as well as it does not in small part *because* people do things for reasons beyond the monetary reward.

Remember working with a Russian ex-professional coder postdoc, and I fretted over the complexity and time it would take to do a thing, and he just held up a hand calmly saying "Torbjörn. Trust." I heard that interview in his voice.

We're kinda in a reverse Monsters Inc situation where the initial web 2.0 pitch was that you'd share silly little jokes (pics of cats that would like to haz cheezburgers or whatever), but then it turned out that scaring people was 100 times more powerful, so in the end we switched to that.

Speaking of departmental independence, do you know of the Swedish/Finnish concept of "ministerial rule"? It's a derogatory term, used for bad ministers who can't keep their dirty fingers out of the bureaucratic cookie jar. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministe...

Likely the most important thing I've ever written — if you're an academic and the AI mania unsettles you, here's my best shot at presenting some intellectual tools that might help you articulate why. arxiv.org/abs/2610.27251
AI and The Enclosure of the Scientific Commons, by P. K. G. Williams: The scientific literature can be viewed as an "information commons:" an intangible resource that "no one owns and is shared by everyone." There are well-established economic and political frameworks for understanding such commons, emerging from the history of agricultural common lands found in places like preindustrial England. This article provides a primer on the history and these frameworks, and considers a key difference between the information commons and the fields of yore: while information commons are robust and immensely valuable — some can be said to rank among humanity's greatest achievements — the English agricultural commons no longer meaningfully exist. The latter are gone not because of the well-known "tragedy of the commons," but rather a phenomenon known as the enclosure movement (~1600–1800) that transformed the common lands into private property. Many observers, then and now, judge enclosure to have been theft at a societal scale. This article argues that artificial intelligence (AI) provides precisely the tools needed to enable a previously-infeasible enclosure of the information commons. Although AI-enabled enclosure does not operate identically to physical enclosure, it shares the key features of turning the commons into private wealth and undermining the social systems that support them (via "slop spam"). The concepts presented in this article can provide a scholarly basis for interrogating the foreboding feeling that AI may represent not just a smash-and-grab, but an attack upon a whole way of life.

I remember when I did a song with her for her album, I was in San Francisco and they sent someone with a locked briefcase with an iPad and one song on it and they flew to San Francisco, and played the song I've done with her. And they asked if I like it and I was like Yeah' and then they took it back, that's how I hear it."

My #1 movie mistake is European medieval music being replaced with Renaissance music. Actual European medieval was working a lot with elaborate melodies around constant organ points, and thus sounding, to our ears, mostly like a lot of present day Midle-Eastern music.

Really appreciate that about the last Dune movie franchise: They really do tell the story of the book, just slightly simplified. Moving on to the book, you're not turned off, it's more like sitting around a campfire getting a better embellished version of the story.

I really benefited from having seen the latest two movies before starting with the book. I sadly don't have the time for All That Shit anymore. Relatedly, I recently finished Neuromancer, after years of struggle. Really great book! Now I'll start over, because I've forgotten how it started.

Worked for 53s >

Yes—the private key really is the integer 4. I independently checked the published certificate for EM OV TLS CA – G3C: deriving a P-384 public key from private scalar 4 produces exactly the public key in that certificate. [GitHub]

I checked the other seven too. All eight private keys fit in a single byte:

4, 56, 66, 115, 155, 156, 230, 237

They should have been sampled securely from an enormous, roughly 384-bit range. These can instead be recovered by trying the 255 nonzero byte values and comparing the resulting public keys with the certificates. The published proof of concept does precisely that.
[Fluepke/emudrahahahahaha: Private Keys · GitHub +1]

These are CA signing keys: possession lets someone issue fraudulent certificates that clients still trusting those chains could accept. Mozilla explicitly confirms that consequence. [blog.mozilla.org]
