When you write a book you actually write several books. There's the one you know you wrote. Then there's the one your readers bring their experiences to. This is a big part of the magic. NEW: The CNN/MSNOW/Politico hearing has concluded. It seems clear to me that Judge Kelly will issue a TRO or a preliminary injunction to restore the press passes. The nice part about writing Australian-based crime fiction is that my main characters can use their wits to overcome obstacles and dirtbags, instead of spraying a shit-ton of bullets at them from behind a conveniently located tree. Makes the writing a lot more fun. Hopefully the reading, too.

Review:

Nick Harding is exactly the kind of detective I like reading about: competent, sharp, and constantly annoyed about the job he's actually good at. The setup here is great, he's handed two cases at once, one he hates (playing mediator between a dying rich man and his estranged son) and one that's more his speed (tracking down a deadbeat who's run off with millions). Watching him drag himself through the case he doesn't want, while trying to focus on the one he does, is where a lot of the book's personality comes from.

What surprised me is how the two cases end up feeding each other. I expected the deadbeat hunt to be the "fun" plot and the mediation job to just be a subplot Nick complains about, but McFadden flips that. The deadbeat turns out to have a backstory that actually complicates things, and suddenly Nick, and the reader, can't be sure who the real bad guy is anymore. It's a nice bit of misdirection that doesn't feel cheap.

This is Book 2 in the series, and Nick's voice already feels fully formed, dry, stubborn, likeable precisely because he doesn't try to be. If you enjoy detective leads with a strong personal wall of "I don't want to be here but I'm the only one who can fix this," Nick fits right in that mold.
