Putin reached across borders in 2016 to help Trump come to power and MBS did again to help Trump retake power in 2024. There's absolutely no countervailing force opposing Trump from the outside.

One thing that Trumpism has made clear over and over again is that the global far right understands itself to be in a ideological alliance the helps itself across borders, and the center and left largely do not.

She’s right. The establishment won’t give it up. They need to have control of the party snatched out of their nerveless fingers and given to people who will exercise power on behalf of human constituents.

So, this very sympathetic piece where the subject is “a lifelong Democrat who had voted for Trump for the first time in 2024”. 5 minutes of checking his facebook shows pro Trump posts as far back as 2019, and a post saying that he “stands with Trump” posted just a couple of days after Trumps coup.

it is also the case that most places do regulate rents in various ways and that most of those policies are not stupid, though they do entail trade-offs, and it’s not because everybody is corrupt and idiotic, and you, social media wonk, are smarter than everybody.

none of this is to say that “rent control is good”! housing policy is incredibly multidimensional, anything you do will have effects desirable and undesirable, it is very much the case that some forms of rent control under some sets of circumstances have been very harmful.

but to ensure households individually can afford to remain housed where they are and to ensure the stability of actual communities of people that might otherwise be disrupted by market forces. these might be two more green lines!

there is quiet propaganda in the choice of what to list: the main reason for rent stabilization isn’t to save existing renters money per se…

if the former, rents on other apartments are expected to rise and availability of other apartments expected to fall. that is, using rent control to preserve existing community members ability to remain works as advertised, but @jburnmurdoch.ft.com blithely tallies that as two losses.

as @jburnmurdoch.ft.com mentions later in the thread, effects are contingent upon overall conditions, is the purpose of the rent control to ensure existing renters maintain access to undersupplied housing, or is it to maintain stability even where housing is reasonably abundant?

but “rent control” policies are extraordinarily heterogeneous, and these effects are dependent upon details. is this traditional “hard” rent control — the state sets rents — or vacancy decontrolled rent stabilization? 3/

I think a lot about Biden/Garland keeping David Weiss on as US Attorney, because they didn't want to meddle with the Hunter probe. And then Garland elevating Weiss to special counsel so he could convict Hunter. And this having ZERO IMPACT on the GOP certainty that Biden was rigging the DOJ
