Floodlight @floodlightnews.org · 10h
Last month, Floodlight used a thermal drone to find DataOne's data center in Vineland, NJ, running at least 45 gas-powered generators without a state permit. Now, New Jersey regulators have issued their largest-ever fine against a data center.

New Jersey says DataOne’s 62 generators are illegal. It’s letting them run for 45 more days.
The state's $1 million fine comes less than a month after Floodlight’s visual investigation publicly exposed the Vineland site’s generator fleet for the first time

Avoid describing technology like people. "But when the intended referent is some specific technological system, it is always better to name that system itself. Maybe it's some specific product. Or maybe it's a system with a particular function like automatic transcription." Or maybe a person.

I wanted to share a blackout poem I made at the last Possible Futures workshop bc it captures how I feel a lot of the time: "I'm often accused of being an optimist, and it's true As angry as I may be As disappointed as I may be My heart is a strategic opening" [excavated from a Reagan speech]
A blackout poem on a torn-out page of a book. The book title at the top of the page is "Speaking My Mind", and the page number is 337. The visible text reads:

I'm often accused of being an optimist, and it's true
As angry as I may be
As disappointed as I may be
My heart
is
a strategic opening

This. When “frontier” started getting deployed in context of AI, I thought “Were there no humanities majors in the room?” Maybe some marketing team thought it romantically evoked pushing boundaries/space exploration. But it also connotes lawlessness, exploitation of people and resources, even death.

Whatever you do, don't smoke an entire brisket at a job interview, it's a lot of equipment to bring in, it takes a really long time to do it right and those conference rooms have notoriously poor ventilation

Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story. For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards. Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

Someone talked to ChatGPT on their phone during a meetup I was in yesterday and just that one instance seemed to be violating some social norms, if there are such things in a tech meetup. I can't imagine why we'd welcome more of this.

Amazing that Windows was the winner! It's too bad it takes so much effort to revive a perfectly good device. Planned obsolescence succeeds so often. Nice perseverance. I'm not sure I could pull up 2003 MCSE skills if I had them.

Four Social Contracts

Epstein Class
White Americans
People of Color
Black Americans

When you are in need, you are offered a conditional promise.
Perform the right values. Achieve the right credentials.
Don't make demands as a group.
Don't seek solidarity with other groups.
The contract may honor you, but the terms can be changed when you no longer prove useful.

AI safety means different things to different people. I want safety through transparency and decency. Safe AI builders ask permission instead of stealing books and art. They share the information they build from, so we know how their AI systems are biased.
