Programme available: 'Economics & Politics in the Early Modern Epic', 19 June 2026, Sussex An international symposium reevaluating the relationship between the economic & the political in early modern epic poems & their influences. rensoc.org.uk/announcement... #EarlyModernEvents #ItWillBeEpic
Full Description:

Early modern epic poetry, it has long been felt, participated in the humanist drive toward a recognisably modern political consciousness. Northrop Frye influentially categorised early modern epics as ‘high mimetic’; this was an ‘encyclopedic’ as opposed to an ‘episodic’ mode, the mode of ‘the social spokesman’ as opposed to the ‘isolated individual’. The encyclopaedic poems of this period, The Faerie Queene, The Lusiad, Jerusalem Delivered, Paradise Lost, are national epics unified by patriotic and religious ideas’. They are also, as critics foregrounded in the eighties and nineties, imperial epics. While many recent studies focus on the global mercantile network that defined the world of early modern epic, there is a risk that this focus on mercantilism replaces, rather than modifies, an earlier fascination with the ‘high mimetic’ politics of epic. How do the two interact? What was the role of economics in early modern political consciousness? To what extent was the relationship between the two in fact ‘modern’ (which, among other things, might mean incipiently capitalist), and on what basis would we make this argument? How do political ideologies warp to accommodate economic incentives in epics of the period, and how does this vary globally? What light can all this throw on questions of early modern race and gender? As politics and economics continue to shapeshift on the global stage, this symposium will revisit the fraught relationship between the two in the epic poetry that has, for centuries since, contributed to Anglo-European conceptions of power.
