1/2. New paper in press in American Psychologist! Our Cumulative Practice Model proposes a pathway to intentional personality change: developing social, emotional, and behavioral skills through cycles of deliberate practice and feedback, without necessarily changing basic traits.

As a demonstration, we use the current database to test links between SEB skills and academic achievement. Self-management skills showed the strongest meta-analytic association with academic achievement among the five SEB domains above and beyond conscientiousness.

The Bare Necessities of NCA
“Necessary condition analysis do not provide credible nor reliable necessity conditions when applied to psychological data.”

New preprint! Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) is a 'new' method that promises to identify what must be present for an outcome to occur. Could it work for psychogical data? Good news: NCA often finds necessary conditions. Bad news: the data-generating process contains none.

Psychology has a whole cottage industry in which people come up with some construct that is essentially "attitudes/beliefs/expectations/feelings about X", and then the central claim is that this construct is a super important determinant of future X outcomes.>

I've used Lavaan almost every (work)day for 15 years, but this open source labour of love has never received proper institutional support. I'm delighted to be a small part of an 1.5M OpenScienceNL award, led by Jorgensen, to completely revamp and futureproof Lavaan www.openscience.nl/en/news/45-p...

Project Implicit gives you feedback when you complete an IAT, and the IAT literature has aspired to individual level measurement since its inception. In this article, we quantify the individual level uncertainty around these estimates and show that IAT effects can say very little about individuals.

When two measures reflect the same latent construct, treating them as independent predictors is a recipe for fake “incremental validity.” In the implicit-measure debate, this is probably happening: feracotommaso.github.io/posts/iatmea...
