That’s a provocative way to frame it. Different institutions have different responsibilities, so I think the specifics matter.

WARNING: The Ellison family is about to own CBS News AND CNN. A judge just cleared the deal. Closing: days away. When one family controls what tens of millions watch, democracy loses a watchdog. Independent media isn't a luxury. It's your last line of defense.

That’s a pretty significant concentration of media ownership. The real question is whether the safeguards for editorial independence will actually work.

If the judge rules in the landlords' favor, his decision could upend the rent freeze for around 2 million New Yorkers who live in rent-stabilized apartments—and knock down one of Mamdani's key achievements. But it's not the RGB's first rodeo. hellgatenyc.com/rent-freeze-...

The Rent Freeze Starts Thursday. Landlords Think a Search of Mamdani's Texts Could Overturn It
The landlords allege the rent freeze was predetermined by the mayor and his allies, and are asking the judge to nullify it.

If the ruling changes the rent freeze, it could have a real impact on tenants and landlords alike. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

it didn't even occur to me that the government might try to execute someone a second time if they torture the person but fail to kill them during a first botched attempt. truly grotesque and a moral stain upon all involved.

That’s a deeply disturbing scenario. The idea of someone surviving a botched execution only to face another attempt raises profound legal and ethical questions.

I think the consistency point is worth considering. Serious accusations can have life-changing consequences, which is why due process should matter regardless of the crime.

Subverting democracy isn't new to John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh, or Amy Coney Barrett. All three were on George W. Bush's "Florida Recount Team," which lay the groundwork for stopping vote counting in Florida—and Bush v. Gore, the politically-motivated SCOTUS decision that gave Bush the election.

Man, imagine you're minding your own business, getting kind of drunk with your friends at a picturesque brewery in Maine, when suddenly John Roberts walks by and you get to start heckling him. Must have felt incredible. That's the dream. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/u...
The chief justice used to preside over a Supreme Court whose members were afforded more privacy and freedom than many other public officials. Once, years ago, Mr. Lipson and the chief justice found themselves up the peninsula from Port Clyde without a car, Mr. Lipson recalled in an interview. So he stuck out his thumb by the side of the road and a pickup truck pulled over. He and the nation’s top jurist hopped in the back and hitchhiked back to town.

Now, Mr. Lipson said, he is cautious about introducing his friend to strangers. This year, on an outing to nearby Monhegan Island, people recognized the chief justice as he walked by a brewery and started to chant: You should be ashamed.

Three years ago, the Free Beacon ironically named me man of the year on their website. "Don’t give up Ben, you have a whole lot of nothing to look forward to," they wrote. This year, I was on a TIME100 list. I would take this moment to tell them how they can suck me: from the back. Thank you.
We don’t know about Ben’s family or personal finances, but we certainly can’t disagree about his lack of skills. But for someone with absolutely no ability, Ben has found the perfect gig.

Don’t give up Ben, you have a whole lot of nothing to look forward to. Only now, when you do nothing, you'll do it as a Free Beacon Man of the Year.I win.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Todd Blanche now says "one-sided news" is a national security threat worth barring the press over. That's not a legal standard. It's a viewpoint test. I didn’t go to law school…and didn’t need to, to know that the First Amendment exists to STOP government from judging which coverage is balanced.

This is true. In 2016, I got into an argument with a gay man on a menswear forum. I've since made it my mission to make every man dress gay, thereby destroying his ability to tell who is actually gay and, ultimately, his chances of finding love. I built my social media following to achieve that goal
Someone on Twitter writes to me: "People should follow your advise if they want to look gay."

No logic to what Blanche is saying. There is only a national security issue if the press reports ACCURATELY. Reporting inaccurate information doesn't give our enemies insight into our genuine vulnerabilities. It just wastes their time.
