Instead of abolishing the @parkboard.bsky.social , Ken Sim and the ABC team wants to double-down on a majority (again) when half their previous ABC commissioners abandoned them and 1 of the remaining 3 is consistently a no-show to meetings. @tomdigby1.bsky.social feels otherwise. #VanPoli

Some breaking news: in a special Vancouver Police Board meeting only announced over the weekend, the police board has requested a $50 million increase to their budget for 2026. This comes as other departments across the city are trying to cut staff to ensure a property tax freeze for next year.

Ken Sim and ABC are bringing ~$120m in cuts to community centres, parks, and public services. On Thursday, City Council is voting on a $17m retroactive boost to the 2025 police budget. Now the Police Board is asking for another extra $50 million in 2026. #vanpoli #StopTheCuts #EvictABC

“The optics are, oh, the police get everything they want.” Here’s my story on the Vancouver Police Department asking for a $50 million increase to their 2026 budget while others city departments are facing challenges — and how at least one board member seemed aware of the conflict it would create.

(2/5) The good news is @tomdigby1.bsky.social is calling for a bike lane around prospect point and down the hill, for the safety of cyclists, active mobility and micromobility users. To help this pass, we really need people to email in support and call in to the meeting.

🚨 Important call to action! (1/5) 🚨 A vote on Stanley Park is coming to the Park Board on Sept 15. The staff report calls for working with TransLink to bring bus service around the park (great!!) but no bike lane, despite it being the favourite option among respondents. Report linked here:
A survey showing that the vast majority of respondents said that a Dedicated Bike Lane in Stanley Park would "make [the park] much better." It was the number one choice.

We got rid of our last gas appliance recently, & just got this letter from FortisBC urging us to ‘reconsider’ gas. Wild to see a fossil fuel company this desperate to keep people hooked on methane. Fossil gas is terrible for climate & health—especially for kids. This is straight-up propaganda.
Photo of a letter from FortisBC regarding our recent elimination of gas from our home. I’ve highlighted the following paragraph: “We encourage you to reconsider natural gas. Versatile, abundant and one of the cleanest burning fuels available, natural gas can cook your food, dry your clothes and heat your home and water. It’s also economical. You could save up to $500 a year on your heating bills using natural gas instead of electric baseboards.”

Trump's tariff's pose a grave threat to our national economy. 🚨🍁 I'm proposing an urgent motion for Vancouver City Council to consider at our earliest meeting Tuesday supporting Team Canada/Buy Local. As a Council, City, and as Canadians I'm confident we will come together. #chooseCanada #buylocal
Enactment clauses from proposed emergency motion to Council Tuesday - Choose Canada: Trump’s Tariffs and Buy Local Imperative

reads:

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED
A.	THAT Council affirms and signals the City of Vancouver supports the Team Canada approach to align local, provincial, and national priorities as necessary to counter foreign policies designed to harm the Canadian economy.

B.	THAT Council directs staff to initiate an urgent high-level review of capital projects, suppliers, procurement, and trade agreement exposure and opportunities to Buy Local / Buy Canadian and report back as soon as possible with immediate and long term strategies supporting the Team Canada approach.

C.	THAT Council directs the City’s Business and Economy Office to immediately begin work with local business and community economic development organizations (including but not limited to the BIA Partnership, LOCO BC, GVBOT, CFIB, Destination Vancouver) to explore opportunities to initiate and promote a new targeted Buy Local / Buy Canadian campaign in response to tariffs.

FURTHER THAT the office is tasked to identify and report back with recommendations for streamlined, transparent and nimble City regulation for changes of use, and adaptation of business models to respond to tariffs, supply chain disruption, and GDP growth targets.
