Eisenhower is a solid choice. Kennedy was similarly competent, although disqualified by the shortness of his term (not his fault, obviously): prosecuted the klan, declined to start World War III over Cuba, first president since Roosevelt to go after organized crime, etc

Truman’s administration was unbelievably corrupt and his lack of interest in foreign policy planted the seeds of all kinds of problems that would sprout in later years; Vietnam disqualifies LBJ; Vietnam and Watergate disqualify Nixon; Wilson was a rancid bigot and quasi-dictator.
