Nudists, peaceniks and freeloading travellers: the people keeping the Esperanto dream alive
Esperanto had always seemed to me like an idealistic movement that had failed. So why was its annual congress so vibrant and full of young people?

@footballweekly.bsky.social If slow motion and freeze frames aren’t supposed to be used in VAR reviews, why does the technology provide them? Just turn that function off. The whole thing still feels thrown together.

@helenlohara.bsky.social Hi, sorry to bother you, just wanted to say I really enjoyed your Cyrano de Bergerac piece. I saw it at an impressionable age, in retrospect maybe not the ideal model for my own romantic endeavours.

@samadams.bsky.social Fascinated to hear you mention Midsomer Murders (which I unashamedly love). It slightly baffles me that it’s seemingly not well known over there, it’s precision tooled for the Downton Abbey crowd.

I was also asked how I found the book. Short answer is Alex’s (another excellent history storyteller, as it goes!) History’s Heroes programme. I think what sparked it for me, however, is that I’ve always been fascinated by how fiction dealt (for better or for worse) with the possibilities of (1/2)

@drlindseyfitz.bsky.social Well that was….wildly successful! We end the meetings by going round the room and giving marks out of ten. Every score was between 8 and 9.5, I’m not sure we’ve ever had that degree of (positive, at least!) consensus before.

@thehighsign.bsky.social Hi, just listened to the ‘are movie theatres cool again’ bonus and it struck a chord. A cinema near me just had a pre-code season and I was consistently struck by how full the screenings were but more by how young the audience skewed.

@thehighsign.bsky.social Hi, sorry to bother you and a propos of nothing at all, but I’d read the hell out of anything you have to say about Shakespeare. I kind of came late to him (Henry V at school, then went off to a science degree) with a transformative experience of The Tempest in Stratford…
