Tom Ackers @tomackers.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Don’t want to ignore that financial repression, wage constraint etc in China are a sacrifice forced on Chinese workers, in exchange for technological & trade preeminence. Tom Ackers @tomackers.bsky.social · 30/09/2026And yet Only the “good” kind of overcapacity (from the standpoint of human wellbeing, climate, nature) - China’s solar PV exports etc - appears as a “bad” currency imbalance. Only the bad form of overcapacity (AI) appears all fine from a currency perspective via-a-vis US(petro)D hegemony. 120

Tom Ackers @tomackers.bsky.social · 30/09/2026In the meantime, we shouldn't want to see the continued expansion of air travel, and should be working to shrink it instead. 120
Tom Ackers @tomackers.bsky.social · 30/09/2026But to reiterate: I have not myself looked into this seriously at all. IEA, IRENA and others seem cautiously hopeful over 20-30 years, but also v doubtful over the short-medium term: lots of political & economic contingencies, various moving parts. 100
Tom Ackers @tomackers.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Meanwhile, biofuels appear to be the focus. Those also v problematic! But more established & look to remain more cost-competitive for a good while. At the end of the day, all these solutions seem to be a ways off! I worry that futuristic tech-fixes encourage taking our eye off the ball. 210
Tom Ackers @tomackers.bsky.social · 30/09/2026It's also not just cost curves of inputs, but *profitability* that drives capital investment. Cf Brett Christophers' book on the troubled history of investments into renewables-powered electricity: www.versobooks.com/products/306...versobooks.comThe Price is WrongRECENT TECHNICAL ADVANCES mean it is typically cheaper to produce electricity from renewable sources than from fossil fuels. Yet, around the world, the transition to green energy is happening too slow... 110
Tom Ackers @tomackers.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Also big barriers. The blogpost talks about cost of energy via solar PV. What about cost of electrolysers, DAC, and other kit? A quick google => capital investments into this stuff currently lag, w China most effective in directing investments. Not all synthetics aim to use atm CO2 as feedstock 110
Tom Ackers @tomackers.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Yeah I also think that's a plausible fix - eventually! That blogpost says this stuff is viable in the "near term future" tho, which I think is misleading. IEA suggests that by 2050, some jet fuel provided by synthetics - but only in regions with strong mandates in place. (EU wants 35%) 100
Reposted by Tom AckersTom Ackers @tomackers.bsky.social · 28/09/2026So anyway yeah, good to R&D electric planes & other ecological alternatives to jet fuel. But in the meantime presumably best to not get excited / feed the hype? and don’t fly at all if possible 231
Tom Ackers @tomackers.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Still not nearly enough initiative or sufficiently large & robust moves. Also insane that it takes the threat of China dominating these sectors for the EU to start getting even small-steps serious about building its own capacity. Or at least that’s what it looks like to this lay observer. 121
Tom Ackers @tomackers.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Both have been world historically important for energy transition, & to that extent v welcome. But European states & capital were not themselves taking appropriate levels of initiative before China dumped a load of product onto “their” markets. 130
