The other week I saw the 1918 Danish silent film Trip to Mars | Himmelskibet and it was a total delight; the main thrill was that they flew to Mars in a BIPLANE. I kept trying to imagine some kind of crossover with Project Hail Mary and couldn't make it happen but I'll keep trying.

A flying vessel that looks like a metal airship with biplane wings stuck on the top. On the side in huge black lettering it says "Excelsior".

I think Noah Kahan's "Dial Drunk" is a masterpiece of perspective storytelling in a song. I love it. He's so good at writing about shame-ridden masculinity and depression.

I recently got some hand weights and HW, who is very interested in exercising, asked if he could use them. I ran him through basic safety - don't lock your joints, lay them down when done, never drop or throw - and I just caught him carefully instructing J in the same safety procedures.

HW had a playdate with a new friend N today, and when they tried to rope me into a prank-based game I said no thanks guys, please play without my involvement; then N said, "Why does HW have such STRICT RULES? Like 'no I'm not going to play with you blah blah blah'?" I was offended.

So I learned today that HW has been passive-aggressively reminding my mum that my dad (with whom she had a traumatic divorce nearly 20 years ago) is STILL PART OF HER FAMILY and she should GO VISIT HIM. Uhhh I think we need to have a conversation about divorce.

At the moment HW is doing a thing where he wakes up at 3am, yells MUUUUUM at the top of his voice, then immediately falls back asleep once we check in on him. It's driving us crazy but he so clearly is not fully awake/conscious in that moment that we just have to wait for him to grow out of it.

I mean just within this story, you get not only the substance of this observation from her, which is beautiful, but the very fact that when she read scripture, she wanted to truly understand it, to see how it made sense to her and was consistent with what she knew was right and sensible.
