Yesterday I mentioned my 2001 NASA publication HUMANS TO MARS: FIFTY YEARS OF MISSION PLANNING, 1950-2000. For them what are not familiar with it, here's a link to it on NTRS: ntrs.nasa.gov/citations/20... Fifty plans for crewed Mars missions over fifty years. I'd love to update and expand it.

New paper alert! tl;dr: parts of what we thought were the oldest rocks on Venus might in fact be among the youngest. This story involves the "tessera" on Venus, which is some of the weirdest stuff in the Solar System. A thread:
Tessera on Venus, seen with radar backscatter imagery and a colour stretch that goes from rough (yellow) to smooth (purple). Normally, radar imagery is shown in greyscale, but that's BORING

My day job is at a rural branch of a public library, and we have a Pride display. Yesterday I was at the desk when a man came in. Fifties, maybe, or sixties. Plaid shirt, mesh trucker cap, suspenders. He went up to the display and just stood there for a long moment. Then he came up to the desk. 🧵 1/

8.8 Million pounds of thrust thundering into the evening sky as NASA's Artemis II mission lifts off from Launch Complex 39B. The SLS rocket soared in a seemingly flawless climb to orbit, with the core stage placing Orion and the ICPS on their way to their initial checkout orbit in High Earth Orbit.
The SLS rocket climbs away into a near cloudless sky with a nearly 600 foot long tail of fire from the twin solid rocket boosters.

FWIW absolutely no one I know who has expertise in spaceflight or planetary exploration thinks this is either remotely plausible or a good idea to attempt on such a timeline. The dominant reaction is somewhere on the spectrum between mockery and dismay. Real, important science was cancelled for this

Eric Berger is a malicious actor, as proven by this absolute dreck posted to @arstechnica.com, which goes beyond both sidesing NASA cuts, and basically justifying them in the process. Only one Elon Musk mention basically in passing. @sciguyspace.bsky.social is a Paid SpaceX/Musk promoter. Block him
One could go on. Much of the space community has been puzzled as to why NASA has been spending on the order of half a billion dollars to develop a Lunar Gateway in an odd orbit around the Moon. It remains years away from launching, and if it ever does fly, it would increase the energy needed to reach the surface of the Moon. The reason, according to multiple sources at the agency when the Gateway was conceived, is that the lunar space station would offer jobs to the current flight controllers operating the International Space Station, which is due to retire in 2030.

In recent years, NASA has been in the midst of a difficult transition. The agency deserves a lot of credit for nurturing a commercial space industry that now is the envy of the world. But as part of this, NASA has been moving away from owning and operating its rockets, spacecraft, and other hardware and buying services from this commercial space industry. This transition from traditional space to commercial space marks an important step for NASA to remain on the cutting edge of exploration and science rather than trying to compete with US industry.

But it is also a painful step.
