Started doing daf yomi last week. Sunday’s daf (Bekhorot 8) is about animal procreation…opening with dulfanin aka mermaids! (Or maybe dolphins).

I'm reading Joseph Dan's article on teraphim and ran into this evocative quote about the memory of the dead attributed to Rabbi Eleazar of Worms (quoted by Dan from R. Johanan Alemano's Shaar ha-Heshek, a "kabbalistic, philosophical, and demonological compilation."
"And so wrote Rabbi Eleazar of Worms, in these words: Most of the dead [keep thinking] the same thought that they had in the moment the soul left the body"

Upgrading my library with facet classification, online search, and STICKERS!!! I’m at enough books that I’m starting to not be able to find books I reference less frequently. My books are mostly in LibraryThing already but I’m adding shelf location and search tags. Not a small project but fun!

Lizard Hamsas! North African Jewish hamsas sometimes use a lizard motif. According to Shalom Sabar "The lizard represents regeneration and was used for the protection of mother and child." Here's one from the William Gross collection from Sabar's entry "Amulets" in Enc. of Jews in the Islamic World

Lol. My buddy Meg got annoyed at a dude who read Bereshit Rabbah 22 about Cain & Abel arguing over who would get to marry the First Eve & thought they were talking about their mother (eww) even though Bereshit Rabbah 18 explained that the First Eve was a different person.
"Cain said to Abel his brother. It was when they were in the field. Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him" (Genesis 4:8).
"Cain said to Abel his brother. It was when they were..." - about what were they quarreling?
They said: 'Let us divide the world between us.
One took the land and one took the movable property. This one said: "The land on which you are standing is mine? That one said: What you are wearing is mine? That one said: "Take it off.
This one said: 'Fly. As a result: "Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him." Rabbi Yehoshua of Sikhnin said in the name of Rabbi Levi: Both of them took the land and both of them took the movable property. Regarding what, then, were they quarreling? Rather, this one said: "The Temple shall be built in my domain, and that one said: "The Temple shall be built in my domain, as it is stated: "It was when they were in the field," and "field" is nothing other than the Temple, as it says: "Zion will be plowed like a field" (Micah 3:12). As a result:
"Cain rose up against Abel his brother..."
Yehuda bar Rabbi said: They were quarreling over who would wed the first Eve. Rabbi Aivu said: The first Eve had returned to dust.
Regarding what, then, were they quarreling?
Rabbi Huna said: An extra twin sister was born with Abel. This one [Cain| said: 'I will take her, as I am the firstborn. That one [Abel said: 'I will take her, as she was born with me? As a result:
"Cain rose up"

Reading parsha Vaethchanan. The Me’am Lo’ez commentary has multiple explanations for Moses pleading to enter the promised land including a desire to die there. ML describes souls who die outside the land being surrounded by angels of destruction and “suffer in roundabout paths until it can ascend”

Starting to think about stories to tell at this year's Monsters and Mulled Wine event. I'm hunting for a chevre kadisha (burial society) story and ran into this fun anecdote from the Israeli Folktale Archive "676*D The Brave Man at the Cemetery" folkmasa.org/ifa/mi_sipur...
A candidate for the Hebra Kadisha had to show his courage by cooking a pot of cemetery porridge at night before being accepted. When, during the task, the chairman of the society wanted to scare him, hid nearby and extended his hand to him, supposedly begging him for some food, the candidate filled his hand with boiling porridge. Since then, the society has stopped the tests.

One of the Baal Shem Tov's house protection rituals includes reciting certain Psalms after burying quicksilver (mercury) in small jars, sealed in wax, under your doorposts and corners of the house. Check out these small British jars and their description. I wonder if they served a similar purpose?
Two 19th century brown stoneware jars which have a slip or glaze. They both taper towards the top where there is a shallow rolled lip. One is smaller than the other and the smaller one has lost some of its glaze/slip. These jars were found under the floorboards of a house with a stone carved face see LVPL-554BD1. Noramlly these objects would be too late to record on the PAS database but due to their association with the stone head they have been recorded.

he Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) is a voluntary programme run by the United Kingdom government to record the increasing numbers of small finds of archaeological interest found by members of the public. The scheme started in 1997 and now covers most of England and Wales. Finds are published at https://finds.org.uk

The Passover Haggadah is built on fours, including four questions, four children, and four cups of wine. But the rabbis of the Talmud considered doing things, such as drinking, in pairs (four= two pairs) an unlucky number that could attract sorcery and demons (shedim). (1/2)

Reading about Elijah & ran into a fun bit of Talmud about magical/medicinal use of spit. To save a marriage (the husband is a jerk) & at the prompting of Elijah Rabbi Meir "pretended to have a sore in his eye & said: ‘Does anyone know how to cure an eye with a charm?’" The wife then spits in his eye
Another interpretation, “seek peace and pursue it” – there was once an incident involving Rabbi Meir, who was sitting and lecturing…. *And a certain woman came to hear his lecture. That woman went home. It was Shabbat eve, and she found that her candle had already become extinguished. Her husband asked her: ‘Where have you been until now?’ She said to him: ‘I was listening to Rabbi Meir lecture.’ That man was a scoffer, and he said to her: ‘I swear, you will not enter my house until you go and spit in Rabbi Meir’s face.’ She left his house. Elijah, of blessed memory, appeared to Rabbi Meir, and said to him: ‘Because of you, that woman has left her house.’ Elijah, of blessed memory, informed him how the incident transpired. What did Rabbi Meir do? He went and sat in the great study hall. That woman came there to pray and he saw her. He pretended to have a sore [in his eye] and said: ‘Does anyone know how to cure an eye with a charm?’ That woman said to him: ‘I have come to cure by using charms.’ She spat in his face. *That was the cure for an eye sore. He said to her: ‘Say to your husband: I have spat in Rabbi Meir’s face.’ He said to her [further]: ‘Go and reconcile with your husband.’ See how great the power of peace is.

😂 still excited but also foiled! Got a print copy of Dan Ben-Amos dissertation which is titled “Narrative Forms in The Haggadah.” How Passover appropriate right? Nope! He means “aggadah” (non-legal rabbinic lit). Not “Haggadah” eg Passover seder text. Yay transliteration! Ok, back to Elijah then.

So how did the Israelites know to follow Moses? According to Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer it's because the immortal Serach bat Asher lived among them. She remembered that, 400 years ago, Joseph had promised that God would "deeply remember them."

The giants, from the Nephalim in Genesis through the rabbinic stories of Og to Joshua, Caleb, and David's battles with the Anakites, play such an outsized and complex role in the Tanakh that it's sometimes amazes that, unlike, shedim, their story just ends. I wonder if God misses them?

There seems to be a moment when, according to Jewish lore, there were no more giants. I know of two candidates for the last giants: Achimen, Sheshal, and Talmi who were allowed to live until the 2nd temple (Sotah 35b, Meam Loez) & the Anakite giant tribes in Gaza, Gat, Ashdod (Joshua). Any others?
