Hey folks, if you also like great books and great writing and, furthermore, can tolerate me: next week (10/12) at 6 PM, I'm doing an event with @adamoprice.bsky.social at Lot 49 in Fishtown. Adam is also reading at Rutgers-Camden the next night at 6 PM. You should come to one of these.

I flipped my wig (chuckled thoughtfully in a waiting room) for this essay on wigs. It thoughtfully captures the load-bearing nature of the middle aged guy-barber relationship.

I have a new essay up today in @northamerreview.bsky.social, the literal first lit mag I ever submitted to, back in 2005 (they rejected me, correctly), so this is a pretty exciting one for me. It's about a person I know who has gotten obsessed with wigs. northamericanreview.org/open-space/2...
chunk from the middle of the essay that reads:
"She always has some new fixation, a new practice or product that is going to fix every problem in her life, not just the immediate malady but a long string of issues that follow from it—before the raw milk it was gardening and before that it was a new brand of natural makeup and before that it was quitting pot and before that it was smoking pot—and lately she has gotten extremely into wigs, has acquired a minimum of one new wig per month during this calendar year, has in fact asked me not to tell her husband, who I’ve only met once and to whom I never speak, about her wig purchases because she’s been buying the really high-end stuff, at prices she cannot bring herself to speak aloud, besides which she’s not sure if he has looked up from his phone long enough to notice that her hair is changing style, length, and color occasionally multiple times in a single day; "

Working in Camden (or, previously, North Philly), you get a lot of these conversations from people who really, really want you to tell them how scary and bad it is, and they are so disappointed when you don't comply.

Met a guy this weekend who looked stunned when I told him I work in Camden and love it there. He launched into a long story about how his dad's tires got slashes in Camden in 1978, and no one in his family has ever gone back. Not my problem if you're a weird lil baby, man

there's a very popular posting style on here that I think of as "smugly illiterate," where the poster imagines a version of an article or video that would be really annoying and then posts condescending threads about what they assume is in that video or article. I recommend not doing that.
