Well, happy Charles Darwin is “very poorly today & very stupid & hate[s] everybody & everything” to all who celebrate, because he wrote those words in a letter to his friend (and author of Principles of Geology) Charles Lyell 161 years ago today

Two panel comic. Panel 1: two sharks are sitting in a cafe. A smaller shark holding a teacup says discreetly to the other, “okay, look at this couple behind you - but don’t make it obvious.” Panel 2: the other shark, a Great White shark, turns its gigantic head in the most obvious way possible to look across the room at some sharks chatting at another table.

Got out with the camera today. It was a lovely Saturday.
Brighton beach, with pebbles in the foreground, the sea being slightly frothy... And a quite cloudy sky which takes up 2/3rds of the top of the image. It was all about the clouds over the sea today.

Remember where you were on 9-11, 2021? I was teaching high school photography and was in the darkroom with half my class when the other half shouted from the classroom: "Mr. Mac, come see this!" And our lives haven't really recovered much since. Wow. Here's to those who died that day!

A very clear and easy to understand framing of the data protection issues around Smart Glasses. I've chimed in on a few conversations around these devices this week and even opined that I could see bylaws around their use in public spaces. This all adds to that and goes further. Well worth a read!
Al compounds these risks. Seeming anodyne information can be converted into special category data through automated processing alone. A video of a room may become a scene analysis. A face may become an dentity. A conversation may become a transcript. A location may reveal health, religion or politics. A seemingly ordinary clip may be used to infer disability, emotion ethnicity, age, relationships or financial status. The legal risk, therefore, lies not only in capturing the information, but also its processing in context - a process that may be largely opaque event to the wearer.

So...We have an adorable plush toy in the back garden today. As both flats that have access to the back garden are currently on holiday... I'm going to guess we had a 'fox visitor' last night.
A plush toy about 50cm long, that appears to perhaps be a 'badger' or something. Lying in the leafy detritus of the back garden with no obvious origin.

You too can have an accessible conference! Accessibility makes things better for everyone! Open access guidelines, compiled by Alexandra R. A. Lee & me, here 👉 www.degruyterbrill.com/document/doi... #MedievalSky #IMC2026 🗃️
Alexandra R.A. Lee and Alicia Spencer-Hall

Making Conferences More Accessible

Introduction

Many who work in academic settings live with impairments and/or chronic con-ditions, which mean that attending conferences can be a difficult issue. This can be the case for students, early-career researchers, independent scholars, tenured academics, and support staff. All require their needs to be taken into account so that their conference experience is as good as it possibly can be. After the first meetup of Medievalists with Disabilities in 2017, we crowdsourced ideas of how to make conferences more accessible. The ideas presented here came from this meetup, Twitter discussions with the community, and from the Medievalists with Disabilities Slack channel, an online communication platform. This document is the result of that collaborative work, which we have edited together into a more cohesive format. We have revisited and updated the original document, particu-larly bearing in mind the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the nature of con-ference attendance.

These guidelines aim to make conference attendance easier and indeed just simply possible for disabled people and people with chronic conditions by imple-menting certain strategies. If these guidelines are followed, it should mean less work for disabled and chronically ill people. Also, if they became standard, it would significantly improve accessibility. Many of the suggestions do not require many changes or much effort or expense but would make a huge difference to those they would support. You will notice that we have taken guidance from around the world, and a multitude of different contexts: while we are medieval-ists, after the first section, the guidance we offer is not disciplinary-specific and is universally applicable for academic events.2

Accurate.
Screenshot of a social media post by Angus McIntyre (@angusm@mastodon.social). The post humorously claims that the UK government's plan to teach 10 million British children how to use VPNs could become one of the largest IT education projects ever. It jokes that experts support the scheme because peer education and incentives will help it succeed, and includes a mock quote saying that, with the rise of autocratic governments worldwide, VPN literacy is more important than ever and that the project comes at the right time. The humour derives from the implication that government internet restrictions would encourage widespread VPN use among young people.

In accordance with ancient tradition, our next Prime Minister is announced to the nation while standing between a furry and a man with a bin on his head.
A victorious Andy Burnham MP (24,937 votes), as the result of the Makerfield by-election is announced, flanked by defeated candidates Count Binface (a bloke in a vaguely sci-fi costume with a large bin for a helmet; 95 votes) and Robert Pownall (who is in a full body fox costume, holding a sign reading "Protect British Wildlife"; 18 votes). There are some other candidates there just out of shot but that's not important right now.

"This verdict will have a gigantic chilling effect on our wider rights to protest." Siân Berry MP on the Court of Appeal upholding the proscription of Palestine Action
Quote Graphic from Sian Berry that reads:
“This verdict will have a gigantic chilling effect on our wider rights to protest. I voted against the proscription because I believed it was disproportionate and inappropriate, and today leaves this government as the most draconian I can think of in my lifetime.

“With the rise of authoritarian administrations around the world, and a terrifying increase in far-right activity in this country, Labour ministers are taking a horrible risk with freedom in this country. Alongside, mass live facial recognition, digital ID, restriction of jury trials, and taking away trans people’s rights, they are building a toolkit for tyrants.”
