If I were dealing with a country that supplied me with more artillery shells than the entire EU combined in my existential war, I would simply shut the fuck up about the matters that I promised that country to shut the fuck up about.

Sad to see how Ukraine managed to piss away South Korean goodwill. Complete tunnel vision on their part, zero sophistication in international affairs.

The Europoor Ugly American discourse is trying its damn best to look away from the fact that East Asia is richer than Europe, has better trains than US, and has air conditioning everywhere.

As horrifying as this campaign of premeditated murder is, what might be even more disturbing is the utter indifference of Congress, the public and our allies to such a shocking and unapologetic obliteration of the many laws and norms against targeting civilians. www.nytimes.com/2026/05/31/w...

My contribution to this insane asylum of a discourse is that Asian countries have very cheap delivery food in large part because density makes delivery cheaper. Build more high rise condos and you can get your food delivered much cheaper.

Samsung Electronics' 2028 operating profit is projected to be significantly greater than the operating profit of the top 100 listed companies of Japan combined. Korea is richer than Japan. By a lot. Korea won the race and it's not close.

For an East Asia-focused person, it seems completely insane to me that any US ally would command this much attention from not just US govt, but US society writ large, such that if you're to be considered a well-informed person you're supposed to have a position on the ally's internal politics.

During Trump I, S Korea got fucked up by China for deploying THAAD while the US stood pat oblivious. During Trump II, the THAAD got moved to the Middle East for a war that serves less than zero strategic purpose for US. Is it a surprise that more people are asking what the point of the alliance is?

Doubly this. US hegemony depends on the ability to underwrite the security of its allies. Job number one of this underwriting is to avoid insolvency. Israel is a bad debtor who should have been dropped long time ago. Failure to do so is pushing US closer to insolvency.

Wars break out in the periphery. The center may get tense, but rarely break out into a war. The part of the world that is not involved on this war at all is the center of the world right now. In a roundabout way, we are truly entering the Asian century.

Trump can't steal the midterms. I say that not as a call for complacency, but to right-size worries. Authoritarianism partially exists in our heads. Excessive fear plays into their hands. Be vigilant but don't panic. Don't grant the regime more power than it actually has. Me, in @thebulwark.com:

There is a distinct American culture, but it is more of a meta-culture. It's the persistent tendency to reduce everything to its most childish essence. "Of course you think that, you're 12" meme strikes at a greater truth. Everything about America is childish, in both good ways and bad.
