Today, people are going to start shooting owls in Oregon forests. How is this what conservation is in 2026? We won’t conserve habitat or do anything to stop climate change but we will hunt and kill owls. www.earthisland.org/journal/inde...

The grandeur of seeing the Milky Way in person, or realizing that there really are *that* many stars in the skies is as as close to a religious experience as I'm likely to get.

I tried to go find a dark sky during the eclipse this year. It being Ireland (where there ARE genuinely dark skies, including a preserve in Kerry), I found clouds.

I’ve become obsessed with the disappearing night sky. I miss going outside wherever I was and seeing the stars! Glad to be able to write about this for @us.theguardian.com. Thanks to the kind readers who have already sent me emails about their own night skies. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Skunks (and other wild curious creatures likely to get stuck in traps) really need their paws to dig and get food. Hoping his paw is treatable and he can be rereleased but often the injury is too big/infected which means euthanasia. Please do not use traps!

This is who you’re hurting when you use snap traps! This young skunk reached for bait in the trap and got his paw stuck. He’d probably been there all night and might have been stuck longer if my friend hadn’t seen this and called me to help. Do. Not. Put. Traps. In. Your. Yard.

Anti-Trump Table Setting Fares Poorly at the Oregon State Fair

Got to see the very controversial tablescape at the Oregon State Fair today.
À tablescape in gold with a runner showing the reflecting pool filled with algae. Instead of drinks Diet Coke is on The table. Judging notes read: “While this table was set nicely and attractively, the Oregon State Fair has certain guidelines for the America 250 Division. According to the Decorated Tables and Tabletop Trees Exhibitors Handbook of 2026, "entries must...be non-political and free of trademarked or commercial imagery". Because of those two items, significant deductions were made to this entry.
We appreciate exercising our first amendment freedom of speech while following the Oregon State Fair criteria.”

I cannot stress enough just how dangerous wildfire smoke is to breathe. If your air quality is bad because of fires, wear an N95 mask. It is not “just smoke”. There are heavy metals and chemicals and bad stuff that gets into your lungs and bloodstream.

Today I learned Hey, Arnold! is NOT set in NYC but some fictional mashup of Seattle, Portland, and Brooklyn I have never felt more lied to!
After network executives responded positively to the character, Bartlett developed the show's cast and setting using inspiration from people and locations from his childhood in Seattle, Washington, Portland, Oregon, and Brooklyn, New York. Bartlett created the pilot episode in his living room in 1994, and full production began in 1995. The series transitioned from clay animation in its early
concept stages to cel animation for its first three seasons, before later adopting digital ink-and-paint techniques for its final two seasons.
