When the chap who has come to clear the wasps' nest from your attic exclaims "wow, that's friggin' huge", you begin to wonder whether nuking it from orbit may be the only way... (We've tried to ignore this for two years, but they were finding their way into the youngest's (wasp phobic) room daily.)
A photo of another phone, with a picture of a roofspace with old insulation between the woodwork, slates, and a wasps' nest larger than a football attached to them.

Morning. #my400
Two sheep, one black, one white, in the field at the end of the garden. Fence line and trees beyond are hazy from mist. A watery sun has just risen above the river and hills are hinted at. Blue skies above and everything is framed by the last of the leaves on the wild cherry tree.

will say it again: the most effective way to curb far right agitators like Lowe, "Tommo" et. al. would be to stop their ability to earn money for it from social media or live streaming. So much of it is grifting for revenue, not attention.

This is concerning. Some emergency services aren't able to locate OS grid references easily (and there aren't any obviously simple free apps to tell you this quickly without data even if they could). In rural areas w3w has unfortunately become the norm. Surely someone could design an alternative?

Misty morning hop to work today.
A road leads through the moor and past a tree to the left. To the right, an old barn with a hole in its roof stands empty. The hills beyond are hazy, and the sunrise glows yellow from behind peach clouds.

I missed at least one bus taking these, but the light was perfect, and it was right next to the stop. How could I not? (Emphasis on the "was", it's all been razed now, less than a month later.) Kodak gold 200 in the Rolleicord Va. #photography #filmphotography
A photo from the inside of a garage, but the outer walls are missing, letting us look through the studs out into a back yard There's an open door, painted yellow with sheet metal art of a landscape on it. At the bottom of the door, lego bricks of carious colors are scattered. On one of the joists, a shell necklace is draped over it. Near the bottom of the image the corner of a newspaper is visible, on the left side a drawn blind covers a segment of the studs, still open to the air. Behind that is a lawn, with glimpses of a bike, classic rotary hoist, and lawn chair all visible through the studs. A front on shot of a garage, stripped of any walls or exterior covering, allowing us to see inside. There's countless little details to look at, a yellow oilskin raincoat hung in the front left, hubcaps displayed along the right wall, a few empty lion red bottles next to an overturned piece of mid-century furniture, a hacksaw and pentagonal ceramic tile adorn a back wall. The colors are fairly neutral, with bright warm golden yellow details, and a pastel blue sky above.

I also love seeing the Pennine Tower. It pops out between hedgerows on the lanes around Lancaster, still surprising me because, as a child, it was only ever visible from the motorway. Seeing it from a little country lane is still a thrill. I have a @gailmyerscough.co.uk print of it!

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

As someone who brews their own (I'm cheap and I like to know what's in my beer), just knowing a little of what 'proper' brewers do is fascinating. It also reminds us that swerving the big names, and seeking out something local and different, can be an adventure when you're out and about.

KJ's Sandwich Cafe.
A workshop at a council depot.sign above the open door says "KJ's Sandwich Cafe", but the more official looking sign on the door says "Street Lighting Workshop". There is a give way sign laying on its side in the window, next to a "Pay at machine across road" parking sign. A large red sign on the wall requests that we "do not leave any rubbish or spent lamps in or out side workshop" under which someone has ironically placed an old fashioned black bin, with the number 4 stencilled on it. Red brick, sky scowling.

I'd very much appreciate it if you took a moment to read the alt text on this. www.tom-cox.com
The photo is one I took during a long coastal walk of the Daymark, a brutalist Victorian shipping tower in Devon, UK. It's old, mysterious, seems a bit like it's from outer-space, likes being near the sea, and looks like it could be a great psychedelic record cover so I think it quite sums up the writing on my website, which I wanted to invite new followers here to have a look at via the link above. There's absolutely LOADS on there, much of it readable for free, if you decide to sign up for the emails where I send it out. I deleted my Instagram account today and it's my hope that I can soon get to the stage where Bluesky is the only social media I use and everything else goes to people via my site, without idiot algorithms getting in the way. Which will ultimately give me more time to write (I hope). My suggestion is that you sign up for the free package then, if you like it, you can always support my writing by signing up for the paywalled stuff too. I've offered a choice of prices, starting at less than £2 per month, so hopefully everyone who really wants to read everything I write will be able to afford it.
