Never Knowingly Over-Biked... Taking advantage of the still dry conditions to give the skinny bike a spin on trails that are usually out of bounds for most of the year due to their sogginess. The moor is still as dry as a bone.

Running late leaving home this morning so borrowed my wife's e-bike for the hilly commute through the lanes to my office in our neighbouring valley. My gosh it's a revelation... sprinted up wall-like hills I normally crawl up at 4mph at 12mph+, and arrived at work with barely a fluster.

Morning head-straightening ride much appreciated today. After weeks of sun-bleached whiteness, it's been almost comforting to see the moor revert to its more traditional Autumn drab over the last few days.

Our boy's band are doing a fundraiser for our lovely local community pool next weekend. If you fancy a twilight dip in a beautiful outdoor pool on the edge of Dartmoor accompanied by some great live music then come along... last year's event was great fun.

Sad to realise recently that I've fallen out of love with taking photos. A combination of factors I think - being laid up for my usually most productive period over the winter after significantly damaging myself pursuing photos on a Welsh mountain back in December definitely didn't help...

If you're Dartmoor adjacent and fancy some live music tonight, our boy's band The Juliettes are kicking off Carnival week by playing a free gig in the square in Moretonhampstead, supported by the brilliant Americana singer / songwriter Joe Middleton. Music starts at 8pm.

Apostrophe.
Improvisers, he thinks, making do with the gaps in their knowledge; thousands of years on the wrong track, consoling themselves with the view by the way.
Their lives are an experiment in deception; they increase their lenses to keep a receding future in sight. In arid museums they deplore the sluggishness of their ascent by a bone ladder to where they took off into space-time. They are orbited about an unstable centre, punishing their resources to remain in flight.
There are no journeys,
I tell them. Love turns
on its own axis, as do beauty and truth, and the wise are they who in every generation
remain still to assess their nearness to it by the magnitude of their shadow.

The current spate of wildfires across the country and the tinder-dry state of Dartmoor has made me reflect on some of the incidents I attended. No exaggeration to say that some wildfires were amongst the most physically draining and dangerous jobs I turned out to in the 7 years I was on the run...
