One last thought on the Bungie news today: im glad to see people in leadership owning up to the fact mistakes by former leadership got us into this mess in the first place. but PLEASE remember who actually laid us all off. who was at the helm in 2023, 2024 and 2026 when those layoffs occurred.

Just some thoughts on the 25th anniversary of 9/11 today.

I was 8 25 years ago. Sitting in a classroom on Long Island. Most parents worked and commuted into the city. My 3rd grade teacher lived in lower manhattan. The early school hours are a blur. But I remember teachers coming in and out. Whispers in the hall and front of the room until they decided to put the CRT tv on in the corner of the room. We were 8. We didn’t really understand what we were looking at. But kids in my class knew what those buildings were and that their family worked in or near by WTC.

I remember standing in a bathroom with a friend as she worried for her mom. I remember one by one kids called their parents at the main office. Others got picked up. The busses came early. My sister picked me up from the bus on her way back from high school. She quickly brought me through the living room as my mom stood in front of the massive rolling big screen tv we used to have. The news was on. She hadn’t heard from my dad.

My dad worked in the city in SoHo. He took the ferry that morning. He was in the subway under WTC when the first plane hit. His office watched from the roof in SoHo as the second plane hit. One of his coworkers told him to take his car and get out of manhattan. He was one of the last cars over the bridge home.

My dad made it home. The girl from the bathroom her mom missed the train and was late to work that morning. My teachers apartment was covered in the toxic dust she couldn’t go home. My neighbor was a firefighter. He worked on the pile.

We all knew someone who was there or close. My dad took me to a park to see the smoke a few days later to try and explain what was happening. He knew people in those towers. He had meetings there the week before.

New York changed. People were scared. Security everywhere got tighter. We put yellow ribbons on our doors to show our support. We ran bomb drills at school. We were afraid it would happen again.

I was 8. Now I’m 33. I live across the country and the world doesn’t stop like it did that day. But 25 years later we still say ‘never forget’ and I wonder if we have. We’re still bombing the Middle East. We still vilify and demonize innocent people who just want a good life like anyone else just because they have a different race religion or skin color. We didn’t learn or grow. We stayed in the fear. We subjected my generation to a meaningless war fear and trauma. We’re doing it again to the next.

My deepest hope is that one day we remember and leave this world better than we found it.
