There is a rather wider minority for abolishing the Monarchy (about 1 in 5 to 1 in 4) than for the controversy of whether only white people can be English (1 in 10). It is weird the media classes are so rarely across how niche this 'controversy' is - about 1/4 Reform voters, but few others

At Sea About Ourselves

I meant 'phenomenal consciousness' is a made up term, not 'consciousness'

Tim Crane @timcrane.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
A computer is a being, yes! I just use the word as the most general category for existing things. I myself think that a conscious being has to be in some sense ('pre-reflectively' maybe) aware of itself, in being aware of the world, but many will disagree with this

Tim Crane @timcrane.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I agree there is no sharp line. But I don't think that our language dictates that valenced experience should be called sentience or phenomenal consciousness -- the first for me connotes consciousness of some kind, and the latter is a made up philosophers' term

Before the gold mosaics, Klimt mastered the "Glow." In Lady by the Fireplace (1898), domesticity becomes drama. By using the fire as a spotlight, he transforms a quiet interior into a moody, psychological stage.

We often face grave practical decisions that seem to hinge on whether a system is sentient. This family of cases includes invertebrate animals, people who are unresponsive after brain injury, fetuses,...

If consciousness is pattern recognition then I agree it follows that some Computers are conscious, those that can recognise patterns. Game over!

Get in losers, we're reinventing Narrow AI
Excerpt reads: "Smaller models fine-tuned for industries such as law and finance - or even individual companies - could make AI cheaper to run. Trained on specialist or proprietary data, they may require less computing power while outperforming general-purpose frontier models on narrow tasks."

So much Silicon Valley bs stems from tech bros trying to make LLMs into the ‘AI’ that they envisaged from science fiction. (Hint: the clue is in the name: it’s sci-FI.)

At a bare minimum people should distinguish between making an artificial being that has feelings, makes decisions etc. (SciFi) and Real Existing AI, which is computer science

Tim Crane @timcrane.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I would say it is a real pump but an emulated heart: it does what a heart does. If a computer could do everything the brain does then it would be emulating consciousness, I agree. But there is no reason to think it can.

I use the term 'real existing AI' for AI as it actually is -- computer science -- not for fantasies about how some artificial mind may one day be created. In that respect, it is like Erich Honecker's 'real existing socialism' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_so...

💥Big intervention from Martin Wolf in the FT today. UK “elective dictatorship” + First Past the Post in a multi-party environment is a dangerous mix. A system where 30% of the vote can deliver near-unchecked power is not just unfair. It’s a constitutional vulnerability. www.ft.com/content/1a5a...

In its editorial, the FT has said electoral reform “could help to better align the UK’s anachronistic electoral model with an increasingly multi-party system.” They’re right. FPTP was built for two parties. We need a new voting system fit for today’s multi-party politics. www.ft.com/content/9585...

Right now, this is useless. OpenAI makes zero profit. We should wait for them to make a profit so we can learn any lessons from what they do. Part of the fault of their not making a profit is the extremely inefficient way of making software. They want to "export" this way of making software.
