Fetus (2008) It's not as fun as a lot of Brian Paulin's other stuff, but it's probably my favourite of his stuff. I love the somber melodrama of this one and I think the smaller scale nature of the story makes it feel extra eerie and icky. Amazing monsters too!

'Overnight Success? There’s No Such Thing': Ella Hooper Digs Deep On Her New Album
Beloved Australian singer-songwriter Ella Hooper is back with her third album, Overnight Success, sharing an emotionally resonant message and displaying her most authentic self. On the album, released today, Hooper channels the likes of Linda Ronstadt, Sheryl Crow, and Lucinda Williams, blending her signature flair with classic country and Americana sounds. Across eleven tracks, Hooper displays her artistry, enthusiasm, authenticity, and wit. The album features poignant numbers (Growing Up Is Hard to Do), bluegrass-meets-alt-pop (Bad Word), tongue-in-cheek country-inspired tracks (Cowboy Man), Americana backdrops (Just Along for the Ride), and poetic narratives (When the Shit Went Down). Put simply, Overnight Success is full of surprises – just like the rest of Hooper’s music. Hooper released three albums with her band, Killing Heidi, before branching out into her acclaimed solo career, embracing country and Americana alongside synth-driven rock music. Her 2023 record, Small Town Temple, debuted at #1 on the ARIA Australian Country Chart. Today, Hooper balances living between Melbourne and Nashville. Embedded Content Discussing Overnight Success, Hooper said, “I worked really hard on this record,” adding that she “took risks and fought for things, sent myself broke a few times - making it over multiple trips to Nashville- but also met some incredible talents along the way, and I couldn’t be more confident and stoked with the end result. Worth every sleepless night and grey hair! “It definitely feels like a level up, in my writing especially. I’m exploring my voice and my relationship to Americana, the sounds, the genre, its parameters. I’m not an easy act to pigeonhole; but God, I feel like myself on this record.” To celebrate the release of Overnight Success, Ella Hooper has dug deep for The Music – track by track. Read on to find out more about each song. Overnight Success — Track By Track When The Shit Went Down This song fills in the blanks between where Small Town Temple, my last album, finishes and where Overnight Success begins. I wrote it in the aftermath of losing both my parents in 2022, for those strange, disorienting years where so many of us lost people, lost ourselves, and simply lost sense of what the hell was going on. Musically, it’s a bit of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. There’s an easy swagger to it, some Petty-esque melodic guitar hooks, but underneath that flowy exterior is a song about grief, shock, deep overwhelm poking holes in the fabric of your reality and things that shake you right down to the core. It might be my favourite track in terms of how the music came out just right to support the heavy-ish material with the perfect ‘shitty shimmer’ aesthetic that I often go for, warm, worn and pretty, so you can slip in some gut punches, but people will still tap their feet. Embedded Content I Got Eyes (On You) This one is a bar-room banger, pure and simple. There’s jumping zydeco squeeze box played beautifully by Flora Smith from Melbourne folk legends Small Town Romance, and a chorus that I absolutely cannot sing without twirling around (hence the VERY active, zoomy, silly film clip!) It’s basically a “fool me twice” story. A finger-wagging, thigh-slapping, “girl, you KNOW better than this” - and I just love how much fun it is. It’s my slightly bolder alter-ego singing here, for sure. (‘Della,’ she has been named, thanks to my tour manager). I wanted it to feel like the floorboards are sticky, the beer is spilling, and everyone is letting go - my Americana answer to Robyn’s Dancing on My Own, perhaps. Except there’s more beer involved. Embedded Content Bad Word This song was born out of a particularly hilarious-but-terrible interaction with someone who was deeply committed to seeing the worst in absolutely everything. A real glass-half-empty type. I came away from the interaction thinking: wow, life is hard enough without actively making it harder. Without finding only the cracks in things. Bad Word, when I wrote it, felt punky if acoustic; I just bashed it out in almost one full go (very rare, but I was pissed off and that always helps), but it then became this bluegrass-tinged stomper when I took it to Nashville. The sweeter, more trad but still somewhat trippy feel we got in the session fits what it’s about - remembering to lighten the load where you can. It’s also in honour of my Mum, one of the most radiant, effortlessly accepting, kind and wise people I ever knew. Since losing my mum, I’ve thought a lot about where that primal longing for nurturing, that “cuddle me, mummy!” feeling goes and what to do with it when the person who once gave it to you isn’t physically there anymore. For me, one solution is to get it, or something like it, from nature. Mother Nature. Lying on a hot rock, jumping into an icy clear stream, running in long grass, rolling down hills, lying in the branches of big old gums. It is a mother’s embrace, the human race was literally born of this earth before we were born to our individual parents, we are literally, physically, and in my opinion spiritually, made of her, so her hug counts too. Slow Morning This one has been a live favourite for years, and I always love singing it. I don’t write many slow burns, ballads and torch songs, so when I do, it’s fun to really ham it up and turn up the heat, so to speak! It’s a smoky, steamy slow jam about female pleasure and longing, which I think we could use more songs about in this world.  It’s languid and restrained, the vibe sitting somewhere between the Stones’ Wild Horses and the contained tension of Springsteen’s I’m on Fire. Recording the vocals with Lollies, my producer, and our assistant Phil Bronchstein was one of my favourite days of recording in the whole process; sometimes you get into a zone where lo and behold, you’re peak singing, and you happen to be recording. I wish I could say that happened on command, but it doesn’t. Dammit! It’s luck of the draw, alignment of chance, general vocal health, mental state, match fitness and THE MOON, I dunno. But this day I feel like I was singing the best I’ve ever sung in the studio, and I’m so glad we caught it on this particular track. Let It Fall (The Tower) I wrote this with my friend, folk troubadour Steve Poltz, and this song really did kinda just fall out. We spent the day working on another song - that wasn’t quite working, as is sometimes the case in a co-write session - but as we were finishing up, Steve threw me this little riff. Tumbling fingerpicking, slightly weird timing, no bells and whistles, just asking to be top-lined. It felt very Steve, but very me too. I said, ‘leave it with me.’ And finished writing the lyrics later in my hotel room, and a picture emerged about being okay with the waxing and waning, the ups and downs and quirks of life. It’s a nod to Zen Buddhist ideals, and a bit of a mantra not to fear the Tower moments, as they are inevitable and there is always something on the other side. A ‘Tower moment’ is a tarot reference. There’s quite few Tarot characters and motifs in this song, as that iconography has always spoken to me. We’ve got the Fool, The Tower, the Sun, The Hermit, the Star (my card, as it’s the card that represents Aquarius, my zodiac sign) I’m more comfortable with simplicity in music - and life - than I used to be. I think that’s one of the gifts of getting older, realising you don’t have to gussy everything up all the time; sometimes you can let it be, let it fall. Cowboy Man This is me at my most outward-facing and unabashedly silly and loving it. I’ve always had a penchant for cowboys and Peter Pans, so this song is essentially me taking the piss out of my own romantic misadventures while also making a request to the Gods for a perfect (howdy) pardner to please arrive… at some point. It’s funny and tongue-in-cheek, but there’s something truthful in there too. Musically, I wanted it to be the most shiny, most heavily produced track on the record, so we didn’t shy away from layering up those guitars, stack those harmonies. That’s the incredible backing vocalist to the stars, Maureen Murphy, on the belting high BVs at the middle and end; her exceptional, huge voice stopped me in my tracks, and I swear I felt the studio walls shake – wild stuff! Embedded Content Die Happy This is the sweet, solemn heart of the album for me. It came out of thinking about my parents, music, mortality and love and the fact that all of these things have been intertwined for as long as I can remember. The song starts simply with acoustic guitars and gradually builds with harmonica, fiddle and circular, breath-like backing vocals. They remind me of the folk festivals my music-obsessed parents took me to when I was a kid. Music was our love language. Their love of and religious-level reverence for music influenced me and shaped me so strongly, and I’m grateful every day that they had such impeccable taste. The lyrics are deliberately simple. I’m thanking my parents. I’m thanking music. I’m trying to imagine what it might mean to carry a song with you all the way through your life, and maybe beyond it. “I’m gonna die happy, with a song in my head.” That’s probably the closest thing I have to a manifesto. Just Along For The Ride I wrote this in Nashville after a really great day of co-writing with a new collaborator. I came back to my hotel all charged up and basically spat this song out in one sitting. A two-song day is a songwriter’s dream, so I was riding that high of feeling like I was in the right place, with my people, at the right time, doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing. There are nods to Rumi and Mary Oliver in there because I’m a bit of a poetry nerd, but then of course I have to undercut any highfalutin’ philosophical poetic notions with my favourite line: “Baby, life is short; it’s the only one we’ve got. If you want my advice, better shit or get off the pot.” So, you know. Rumi-ish. Heheh For me, it’s a song about doing the thing. Not waiting for the perfect moment. Getting on with it. Eating the frog. Buying the shoes, hence the opening line of the chorus “Buy something, make a foolish plan” - which is directly lifted from Rumi’s ‘These spiritual window shoppers’ poem, my all-time favourite. Say yes to life. Get in the game. Invictus, with a Nashville twang. Growing Up Is Hard To Do This is my Springsteen-esque romp through the bumps, bruises, laughs and WTF moments of getting older. I wanted it to feel incredibly alive, like you’ve wandered into the front row of an Ella Hooper gig and things are getting a little bit out of hand. There’s a big old sax solo that tips its hat heavily to Clarence Clemons, and a breakdown that makes me want to crouch down, click my fingers and do those Boss moves every time. Lyrically, it’s about accepting that growing up is a mixed bag. There are scars, there are lessons, there are some spectacular mistakes, and hopefully, HOPEFULLY, some wisdom accumulates. “But the alternative isn’t great” is kinda blunt, but I think it's true. It’s grow and change and learn and lose or die. Living a cotton wool half-life in the hopes of not getting too banged up has never made sense to me. And I really do think scars look cool, anyway. Embedded Content 2B Or Not 2B (Light Grey) I like putting a sunny sound around a sad song. There’s something about that contrast that feels very natural to me. Light Grey can be taken to be about a breakup, a death, or both. Maybe that’s the point. Grief and heartbreak can feel surprisingly similar. Both involve learning how to live in a world that has suddenly changed shape. At its heart, it’s a plea to someone I cared about to keep going. To stick it out and see what’s around the next corner, keep pushing even when life is not beer and Skittles. I always wanna know what’s next, and as painful as it all is sometimes, that keeps me going. But that doesn’t work for some people, for many reasons, but it doesn’t mean you don’t wish you could impart that view to them. If they could only see that even in the darkest night of the soul, the dark is not absolute; there’s still a little light, a mix of black and white, and mostly this life is both; it’s all one big grey area, if you ask me. We WISH it was black and white! Overnight Success I wrote this while living back in my childhood hometown of Violet Town during lockdown, with my mum. It’s a song that’s been waiting a long time to find its place. I’ve been called an “overnight success”, and also over the hill. From ‘kindy rock’ to heritage act, it’s been interesting to observe the various reactions to my age and stage as it changes, and I just keep making music. This song is about time, expectation, projection, exhaustion, reinvention and finding a way back to yourself. Reclaiming your artistic core after years of other people deciding what your story is supposed to be. I’ve been incredibly lucky. I’ve also worked incredibly hard. I’ve been a teenage rockstar, I’ve been chewed up and spat out by the music machine, I’ve reinvented myself, started again, surprised myself and occasionally wondered what the hell am I doing here, but I actually wouldn’t change it or swap it with anyone. And I’ve only just started feeling like that. I feel like I’m arriving at something. And reckon this is the best technical song I’ve ever written; I’m so happy with how the delicate, stripped-back approach worked for the record. Bryan Sutton, our acoustic guitarist, really took this song to a starry, swoony, cinematic place that PERFECTLY represents what the little me in the song is dreaming about then going through: the glamorous, lonely, hard, bizarre, mythic, amoral and eternally fascinating (to me), showbiz wringer. Overnight success? There’s no such thing. Overnight Success is out now. Ella Hooper is touring in support of the album this month. A political cartoon by Megan Herbert showing a single mother, recently made homeless after defaulting on her mortgage repayments (as evidenced by visible paperwork), setting up a new home in a tent with her two young children. Surrounded by their essentials stored in storage and plastic bags, the baby crawls on the grass, his older brother heats some food over a camp stove, and his exhausted-looking mother blows up an air mattress. Watching her, the boy says, "Is this what they means when they say 'inflation is the problem,' Mum?"
