Welp, today makes it a month that I've been sick with some kind of respiratory bug. Maybe it will finally start to get better soon?

Good news is I don't have pneumonia. Bad news is that news didn't magically make my cough go away. I miss breathing properly.

With that, back to innocuous stuff. Here's a cute dog butt courtesy of my spouse! There are mice in those bushes and she knows it...

A dog with its front half inside some bushes so that only her back legs and butt are visible. The dog is reddish-gild with a bit of black on her tail. Her posture looks playful, with her tail up and her body sloped down like she is in a play bow. There is a white fence behind the bushes and a bit of visible sidewalk where the dog went in.

I mostly post innocuous stuff for reasons. But I have to say one thing. The idea that people (mostly women) who make allegations of sexual violence do it for money drives me up the wall. I encourage folks to read Suing for Silence by Mandi Gray www.ubcpress.ca/suing-for-si...

So basically… The National Observer found a bunch of websites designed to confuse voters as poison AI that had possible linkages to Keith Wilson’s “Let Alberta Decide”… And when they asked for comment those websites suddenly went offline. Cool. www.nationalobserver.com/2026/09/04/i...

A US-linked network of fake websites is promoting Alberta separatism to AI chatbots

The websites present crude, AI-generated slop disguised as the voice of real Albertans. But they're made in Florida — and they're not even targeting Albertans directly.

I've been working on French using a variety of methods, including formal classes, but listening remains my big struggle*. I finally tried Mauril and it is so cool! Just what I needed for listening practice. *And speaking, but that is a whole other thing. Why does my brain immediately go blank???

I don't know exactly why, but the vibes were very off on our late dog walk. Lots of possible factors - bikes racing, sirens screaming, dogs barking, heavy smoky air, etc. But stay safe tonight folks.

Driving across Canada has been transformative. This is true in some personal ways, but also in how I see this country. The land is absolutely beautiful, coast to coast*. People everywhere have been friendly, and have their own cross-Canada stories and histories.

Saw something this evening that made me think about how much of the internet is people arguing against a version of a thing that only exists in their head. But then I reflected further and actually that's not just an internet thing. It's an everything thing.

By request, bear (and other animal) pics for @jamesstout.bsky.social and @socialistdogmom.bsky.social ! Not American though 🇨🇦 Starting with the black bear that visited my parents' deck last year.

A picture taken through a screen window of a black bear walking around on a deck. Behind the bear there is a grill, a table, and a chair.

A zoomed in picture, taken through a window, of a black bear in the process of knocking over a small grill.

Went for a walk amongst the birds today - which one of my companions called "micro-dosing retirement". 10/10 would recommend.

A red-wing blackbird sitting on a wooden rail with some dry reeds in the background.

A female duck standing on a pathway mid-quack. There are wooden rails behind her at the edge of the pathway, with water visible further behind.

Two drakes swimming in water with dried reeds and grasses behind them.

A small brown and grey bird - I suspect a female swallow - sitting on top of dried reeds.

I was scrolling through my timeline for a weird reason, and found this. Funny story. This happened on a Friday night. I went to rinse the cut and it hurt way more than it should have. I should have gone to urgent care then, but I was sick and stubborn and home alone. I quickly noticed...

Life seems so much simpler when I'm hanging out with the dog and the birds.

The top of an apple tree against a grey sky. The tree has tiny green buds just starting to appear. A small bird is just visible in silhouette sitting on a branch.

I'm sure glad that 99% of what I post online anymore is this.

A reddish-gold dog sitting between coniferous trees and looking up. She has a black harness on. There are some lights hung between the trees and it kind of looks like she is staring at a light bulb (but actually it was squirrels). There is snow on the ground and a wood fence in the background.

I don't know what to call my current emotional state, but I do know that it was perfectly suited to wandering around our neighbourhood park in the snow-lit dark and bitter wind with my favourite mostly domesticated predator and new Noah Kahan for company.

Seems another good time to add some cuteness to people's feeds.

A red-gold dog in a black harness standing and looking up. There is partially melted snow on the ground and she is framed by conifer branches which are in the forefront, between her and the camera. She is very focused on something above her.

Nothing lifts the mood like my dog's goofy squirrel-watching face.

A picture of a reddish-gold dog from above. She is looking up and off to the right of the frame (at squirrels in a treetop). Her head is titled back which makes her ears seem fully upright like a blond German Shepherd. Her mouth is open with her tongue sticking out the side. Her eyes are intensely focused. All in all, she looks completely ridiculous

People shouldn't feel bad about previously admiring someone when they didn't know about the terrible harms that person committed, but we should challenge ourselves to consider how pedestalizing and prioritizing the legacies of charismatic leaders can create harmful dynamics. That can be addressed.

May I offer you some dog joy today?

A golden-reddish dig framed between two trees. She is looking away from the camera, with her head tilted in curiosity. Her ears bend partway up, in a slightly uneven manner which adds to how cute she is. There is a decent amount of snow on the ground.

The ONLY WAY we get out of our current mess is by caring about everyone. Switching the targets of fascism doesn't end fascism. If both political parties embrace full throated fascism, we're not left with any electoral options, and a lot more regular people will embrace their own bigotry.
