Danger to the 2030 Census
Most of us will not be here in the year 2102 when, presumably, the 2030 census will be released for public use by genealogists, local historians, academic historians, and researchers of all kinds. …

The Supreme Court just let third-country deportations resume. UN experts warn of torture and disappearance. A look back at a 1940 deportation to France shows how "temporary" can become a pipeline, and where the comparison to Nazi Germany stops. New on Chills: chills.substack.com/p/what-nazi-...

What Nazi Germany’s First Deportations Can, and Can’t, Tell Us About Third-Country Removals
As the Supreme Court lets the Trump administration resume sending migrants to countries they have no ties to, a 1940 deportation to France shows how “someone else’s problem” can turn deadly.

Old records don't always spell names the way you expect. Before standardized spelling, names were written phonetically — 'Schmidt' becomes 'Smith,' 'O'Brien' becomes 'Brian.' Search for variations, not just exact matches.

During the census, newspapers were interested in the more unusual occupations. They reported there was one John Williams, a Black British subject, born in Barbados, who was an elephant tamer. They changed his name from Robert to John and 61-year-old Robert can be found in 1901. #GenHour #Ancestry

Some parents had not yet decided on a name for their child when the the census came. Robert and Ethel Evans came up with the novel name 'XYZ' for their child. Elsewhere, parents were told they could use 'Baby' or 'Tootsie'! Find out more in 'A History of the Census Takers' - #GenHour #Ancestry
