What a shock. I took a workshop with him at Yale’s summer program a number of years ago. I’m just noticing that paths have crossed more times than I realized. He was actually local, but I first learned what he looked like from an essay of his in the magazine The Believer.

Hi, thanks for posting! We do appreciate you thinking of us even though we have to moderate.

Our stance on all AI generated content (Images, Video, Voiceovers, and whatever else LLM based AI gets up to in the future):

At best, they are approximations of street fighter characters as the AI has no clue what it is trying to create. Because of this, there is no street fighter content so they are not allowed. (rule 1)

Also, they aren't allowed per our source rule. As AI sources cannot be tracked, we must assume that they use uncredited sources in the learning data. (rule 5)

Finally, AI images, video, text, and voiceovers are barely any different than posting a screenshot of a google search. The level of effort is so low that we consider it spam (rule 3).

Because of these reasons, AI art and other AI content is not allowed.

Asking an AI chatbot a question consumes a great deal more energy than finding the answer via simple web search or calculator. It adds extra demand for no good reason, he says, a bit like driving to the shops in an SUV instead of riding your bike.

“You might still get the shopping done, and that single trip alone may not even look all that bad in terms of cost or emissions, but what happens when that’s all of your trips, and when all of society starts doing this?”

So totally this. The loss isn’t just how it impacts me. It’s that the individual is no longer living their life. There is some basic “ick factor” about assuming we can recreate a person’s persona with all of its contradictions AND pretending their lack of existence isn’t the central point.

A decade ago, I started trying to track down a novel I read when I was twelve that has never entirely left me. Today, I finally rediscovered the author and title! The 1980 Orson Scott Card novel A Planet Called Treason. It had a trans protagonist, parthenogenesis, & a surreal delirium section.

I'm working on redrafting a second novella. Did I mention that? I think not. It's still flabergasting to realize how much material I have waiting for me to polish it. The last few years have been incredibly busy and for family/personal reasons particularly hard. It's lovely to find myself again.
