It's always going to be hard to bring back that original DS touch screen feel, unless there's new tech created for resistive touch panels or there's a manufacturer willing to not use capacitive touch panels for the sake of nostalgia. Will definitely be a thing to look for in reviews.

In addition to having large 4.2-inch wide screens (vs. 3.25 inches on DSi), the DSi XL also introduced a bulkier pen-like stylus. The muted colors, larger screens, and pen-stylus definitely made the system feel at-home for older gamers already captivated by games such as Brain Age and Picross 3D.

The jury is still out on it being the "first ever", but when Ubisoft hosted a contest in 2014 to have one lucky fan be the "first to play a game on Everest", many in the comments pointed to the efforts of Grubb and Mueller 9 years prior. Hasn't been debated since! youtu.be/rsOg6HgDHiQ

Learn more from the full interview, which is still available to read in full on the old Gamespy website. Also, this post (lifted from our retired Twitter account) is a mere three days off from the interview's original post date of July 8th (2005), 21 years ago to the day!
Photo of Chris and Neal playing on the DS, along with an interview snippet.

---

GameSpy: Why not a PSP? Or your GameCube? It has a handle.

Neal Mueller: I grew up playing Nintendo, so it was just obvious for us to contact them first. The DS is also portable and really rugged, and they're wireless, which meant I could play against Chris even if we were in different tents.

GameSpy: Wouldn't it have been smarter to leave the DS at home, thus lightening your load?

Neal Mueller: Well, they are very light. And when you go up to base camp, which is 18 thousand feet, the yaks carry your stuff. But I did have to carry it myself when we went from 18 thousand feet to 26 thousand feet, which isn't a trivial amount of distance, and it's pretty vertical as well. But it's so light, and it's really small, so it doesn't really much at all. Plus, we could charge it with these solar panels, and we had to bring solar panels anyway to charge up the radios and the satellite phone.

Chris Grubb: Though the batteries worked better if you warmed them up with your hands a bit first.

According to their July 2005 interview with Gamespy, the pair played Madden NFL 2005, Super Mario 64 DS, and Metroid Prime Hunters - First Hunt as their entertainment. Although some of their equipment had faults with the mountain environment, the DS held firm throughout. In fact, they had 10 units!
GameSpy: Did you guys decide to bring Madden and Metroid because you could play them against each other via WiFi?

Neal Mueller: Yes, and that's why we got the DS. The DS is known for being really good for multiplayer, and it has the WiFi, which is good because wires have a tendency to get lost or broken. Chris and I also like playing multiplayer games, they're a lot more fun than playing alone. Mountain climbing isn't something you do alone anyway, it's not safe, so people who climb mountains like doing things with other people.

Chris Grubb: Also, in mountain climbing, you often have to put your trust in someone else's hands, and it might be someone you've only met a few days before, so it's a good idea to promote bonding between people, whether it's by playing cards or some multiplayer video games.Mid-climb on Everest. 20 years ago today (5/15), Mario returned to his platforming roots in New Super Mario Bros. on #NintendoDS! NSMB ushered in a new age for DS with its launch alongside that of the DS Lite in 2006, and a new age altogether for 2D platformers as the genre started to make its grand return.
Released on May 15th, 2006 (NA), Mario returns in a brand-new 2D adventure across the Mushroom Kingdom - the first new & original 2D Mario platformer created since 1992's Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins on the Game Boy system!

With over 30 million copies sold, New Super Mario Bros. is the highest-selling Nintendo DS game of all time, and the game's launch also helped propel the launch of Nintendo DS Lite, the system's most-popular incarnation.

Looks like it's finally official - Nintendo Switch is now the highest-selling Nintendo platform of all time. It's quite amazing in retrospect considering how long the DS held on to that achievement. Wonder if they could ever find a few more sales in the seat cushions like Sony did for the PS2. 🤣

According to Motoi Okamoto, Mini-Game Director for Super Mario 64 DS, Shigeru Miyamoto would start midnight crunch sessions for the game's development by walking into the office and announcing "It's Mario time."
"In those days, Miyamoto would come to us at 11 PM, after he finished all of his board-member work, and say, "It's Mario time." At that point, we'd start a planning meeting that would run until 2 AM. At that point, Miyamoto would go home, leaving us with the words, "You should return home soon, for your health." Over the next two or three hours, we'd write the game design documents and summarize the instructions for our artists and programmers.

It was the craziest crunch time that I've ever experienced in my development career. But if the God of Games was working so much, could we give up? Miyamoto had incredible stamina."

-Motoi Okamoto, Script and Mini-Game Director for Super Mario 64 DS, in a 2017 interview with Chris Kohler from Gamasutra

Back to work. 🚧 #THIRDPILLAR
“Unlike many people in the company, I was not afraid of Yamauchi-san. I had already fought with him over different issues and I also sometimes publicly opposed his ideas. But Iwata turned me down and said ‘No, we will still give it a try. See what you can do with [it].’ We were both bothered by this, especially since it meant that we had to start all over with our project! So I tried to put my team at ease and I told them ‘I have some experience working with double screens, we will give it our best shot and we’ll see, don’t worry.’ It became Project Nitro, released in 2004 under the name Nintendo DS...”

The radical nature of the Nintendo DS was so out there that even internally, their employees didn’t know what to make of it.
