In addition to having large 4.2-inch wide screens (vs. 3.25 inches on DSi), the DSi XL also introduced a bulkier pen-like stylus. The muted colors, larger screens, and pen-stylus definitely made the system feel at-home for older gamers already captivated by games such as Brain Age and Picross 3D.

Learn more from the full interview, which is still available to read in full on the old Gamespy website. Also, this post (lifted from our retired Twitter account) is a mere three days off from the interview's original post date of July 8th (2005), 21 years ago to the day!

---

GameSpy: Why not a PSP? Or your GameCube? It has a handle.

Neal Mueller: I grew up playing Nintendo, so it was just obvious for us to contact them first. The DS is also portable and really rugged, and they're wireless, which meant I could play against Chris even if we were in different tents.

GameSpy: Wouldn't it have been smarter to leave the DS at home, thus lightening your load?

Neal Mueller: Well, they are very light. And when you go up to base camp, which is 18 thousand feet, the yaks carry your stuff. But I did have to carry it myself when we went from 18 thousand feet to 26 thousand feet, which isn't a trivial amount of distance, and it's pretty vertical as well. But it's so light, and it's really small, so it doesn't really much at all. Plus, we could charge it with these solar panels, and we had to bring solar panels anyway to charge up the radios and the satellite phone.

Chris Grubb: Though the batteries worked better if you warmed them up with your hands a bit first.

According to their July 2005 interview with Gamespy, the pair played Madden NFL 2005, Super Mario 64 DS, and Metroid Prime Hunters - First Hunt as their entertainment. Although some of their equipment had faults with the mountain environment, the DS held firm throughout. In fact, they had 10 units!
GameSpy: Did you guys decide to bring Madden and Metroid because you could play them against each other via WiFi?

Neal Mueller: Yes, and that's why we got the DS. The DS is known for being really good for multiplayer, and it has the WiFi, which is good because wires have a tendency to get lost or broken. Chris and I also like playing multiplayer games, they're a lot more fun than playing alone. Mountain climbing isn't something you do alone anyway, it's not safe, so people who climb mountains like doing things with other people.

Chris Grubb: Also, in mountain climbing, you often have to put your trust in someone else's hands, and it might be someone you've only met a few days before, so it's a good idea to promote bonding between people, whether it's by playing cards or some multiplayer video games.Mid-climb on Everest. On a 73-day trip from the base of Mt. Everest, up to its summit, and back down again, Chris Grubb and Neal Mueller made history by making the #NintendoDS the first video game system to be played atop Earth's tallest mountain above sea level.

Hell, I remember the US commercial for New Super Mario Bros. very well when it was being promoted on television, especially the #NintendoDS Lite feature. Truly a new Mario for a new generation! What memories do you have of the original NSMB?

20 years ago today (5/15), Mario returned to his platforming roots in New Super Mario Bros. on #NintendoDS! NSMB ushered in a new age for DS with its launch alongside that of the DS Lite in 2006, and a new age altogether for 2D platformers as the genre started to make its grand return.
Released on May 15th, 2006 (NA), Mario returns in a brand-new 2D adventure across the Mushroom Kingdom - the first new & original 2D Mario platformer created since 1992's Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins on the Game Boy system!

With over 30 million copies sold, New Super Mario Bros. is the highest-selling Nintendo DS game of all time, and the game's launch also helped propel the launch of Nintendo DS Lite, the system's most-popular incarnation.

Back to work. 🚧 #THIRDPILLAR
“Unlike many people in the company, I was not afraid of Yamauchi-san. I had already fought with him over different issues and I also sometimes publicly opposed his ideas. But Iwata turned me down and said ‘No, we will still give it a try. See what you can do with [it].’ We were both bothered by this, especially since it meant that we had to start all over with our project! So I tried to put my team at ease and I told them ‘I have some experience working with double screens, we will give it our best shot and we’ll see, don’t worry.’ It became Project Nitro, released in 2004 under the name Nintendo DS...”

The radical nature of the Nintendo DS was so out there that even internally, their employees didn’t know what to make of it.

On this day (November 21st) 21 years ago, we were all introduced to the dual-screened wonder that is the Nintendo DS! With a library of close to 3,500 games, 4 different model designs, and so many system variants across those designs, its two screens ushered in a whole new era for Nintendo.

To be honest, I thought it was fake... but it's a legitimate game that came out in 2007. 😅

Third pillar. Weird two-screened thingy. The PSP's bitch. Nintendo's last gasp. The little handheld that could. It prints money. Even your grandma has one. Remade gaming in its image. The granddaddy of mobile. The hottest portable game system in the world. Happy 20th anniversary, Nintendo DS.

Still not a fan of yet another DS retrospective slagging the original NTR-001 model and praising the Lite. 😑
Rolling Stone focusing on the original DS model, and noting that it "turned many off with its cheap-looking design".Rolling Stone noting that the DS Lite redesign "changed the console's perception and helped it take off."

The "Touching is Good" campaign lasted for the lifecycle of the original NTR-001 DS model (2004-2006), being promoted with commercials, print ads, and more. The range was truly something to behold... any specifics you remember from that era? 😄
An advert for Super Mario 64 DS which shows a hand prominently pointing upward. A Piranha Plant is at the end of the pointing index finger, and the Nintendo DS slogan "touching is good" is to its right. The Nintendo DS "touching is good" manifesto ad from an unknown magazine. It reads: "Touching is not good. Or so we're told. Please do not touch... yourself, your nose, wet paint, that zit, grandma's best china. You name it, you can't touch it. We think that's wrong. Why shouldn't you touch what you want? What if you could touch the games you play? What if you could make something jump or shoot or run by just touching it? Let's face it, touching the game means controlling the game. And when we say control, we mean precision control. One right touch and you're master of the universe. One wrong touch and you're toast. Forget everything you've ever been told and repeat after us - touching is good. Touching is good.An advert for the game Advance Wars: Days of Ruin with a prominent hand pointing towards the left. The hand is painted akin to a military bomber plane with bomba being dropped from a hatch on the pointing index finger. The Nintendo DS slogan "touching is good" is displayed over the finger.A special Nintendo DS magazine ad featuring pin-up models. There's an angel/devil archetype as the ad depicts what the good girl does vs. what the bad girl does with their DS. The models are each holding a Nintendo DS NTR-001 model, and the "touching is good" slogan is in the bottom right.

Metroid Prime Pinball is also touted in its descriptions as featuring "the world's first simultaneous 8-player game play on the DS" with the wireless mission mode. It does beat Mario Kart DS (which does the same on DS Download Play) by about three weeks, so the claim is valid!

19 years ago today (10/24), Samus Aran would once again take up residence on #NintendoDS... but with quite the twist. Fuse Games would get the rare second-chance to turn a Nintendo property into a video pinball game, and hence, Metroid Prime Pinball was born!

19 years ago today (10/4), Soma Cruz arrived on #NintendoDS in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. The Magic Seal system is usually seen as Dawn's most divisive mechanic, and it "made [Shutaro Iida, Dawn's programmer] suffer the most" in development, which Iida revealed in a 2021 AMA.

The prominent song lyric in the CM tying it to the #NintendoDS is "I still remember the ways that you touched me", though another lyric in Easy Breezy garnered a tiny bit of controversy. Utada sings "You're easy breezy and I'm Japaneesy", which didn't sit too well with a few people. 😅

Of course, this is a direct reference to the 1982 hit, "867-5309/Jenny" by Tommy Tutone! A very common example sequence, though in this case, it is a few characters short. A WEP key is usually 10 (or 26) hexadecimal characters in length. Jenny needs just a few more digits...

In the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection DS instruction booklet, there's a nice lil' visual joke that you probably saw and chuckled at a bit. On page 12, they show where to input details for an access point's SSID and WEP key. The number sequence they use as the passcode? 8675309.

You can see the E3 2004's platinum silver finish in these photos, and also... swapped power & start/select button positions? 🤨 Looks like it was a little revision made between E3 2004 and the full launch on November 21, 2004... among other changes, of course.

Before the NTR-001 retail model, we had the chunkier Nintendo DS prototype model! Photographed by Evan Amos of Vanamo Media, this glossy white/grey prototype was sent to the FCC by Nintendo to get its filings prior to release. This model is also slightly revised from what was shown at E3 2004.
