1. Accept Brexit has damaged the economy. 2. Act to minimise that damage. 3. Use the next parliament to build a BROAD cross party consensus that rejoining the EU is the best path. 4. The following parliament begins negotiations. 5. Rejoin 5–10 years later. Perhaps 20 years away at best.

I want my country back. By that, I mean a country where I would be confident that a thug who livestreamed himself stabbing an RNLI dingy on an active operation would a) Be universally condemned b) Be swiftly arrested, put on trial and if found guilty, face many years in jail. I miss that country.

It's a fair question, worth unpacking. The OBR 4% forecast is on the lower end of the post-Brexit estimates of the costs. That translates to about £40bn in lost tax revenue.

What a country we have become when the RNLI has to post things like this. Just over 1% of their total rescue work is in the Channel. Meanwhile Reform and Restore continue to badmouth the service.

The RNLI is a charity that exists to save lives at sea.

But recent events have generated deliberate misinformation and a misunderstanding about our purpose and our lifesaving work in the Channel.

As a result, some of our volunteers and staff have been the subject of online and, in some cases, physical abuse.

This is unacceptable.

The RNLI's people represent the very best of society. For over two hundred years they have dedicated themselves to rescuing people they've never met before, without judgment, fear or favour.

We are tasked by HM Coastguard to help those in distress, and we'll do so whenever, wherever and whoever they are.

We launched 9,058 times in 2025.

Only 109 of those launches were to those in distress in the Channel - 1.2% of our total rescue work. Anyone rescued from a small boat by the RNLI is then taken into the care of the relevant UK authorities.

To those who stand with the RNLI, thank you. For more than two hundred years, we've saved lives at sea around the UK and Ireland, and that commitment remains unchanged.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

Though I think the phrasing is important. If the Q had mentioned violence towards police or RNLI the numbers would look very different. (Which is why the govt response should have focused on that).

It's becoming obvious now that the anti-AI (LLMs, autonomous vehicles, etc.) argument is largely an emotional rather than a rational one. It seems (on Bluesky, at least) most attempts at a rational argument with the anti AI group shares the nature of a Remainer arguing with a Brexiteer on X.
