Brett Vogelsinger @thevogelman.bsky.social · 13/10/2026Steinbeck wanted this to be his masterpiece but for critics it lived in the shadow of Grapes of Wrath. I loved it when I did my term paper on it in Gr 11, and it’s experiencing such a resurgence while GoW seems to get no love. I’ve wondered my re-read reaction for a while 🤔 120

Brett Vogelsinger @thevogelman.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Yes! It can be fun to ask them to build it out with legos too. Same principle, and great thinking/conversation ensues. You probably know @angelastockman.bsky.social and her work on Making Writing -- aligns well with your post! 110
Brett Vogelsinger @thevogelman.bsky.social · 03/10/2026How could that not be on the word list?! My first year of teaching I taught Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap to eighth graders (fun text btw!) and that word is in there. 010
Brett Vogelsinger @thevogelman.bsky.social · 03/10/2026This interactive from @nytimes.com feels like a good one to spark a conversation with students about the cost/benefit balance of artificial intelligence in their learning, AND to complicate the conversation. Brett Vogelsinger @thevogelman.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Today, before reading part of Dante‘s Inferno, we worked as a class to create our own Inferno, creating five circles in which misdeeds from our school would be cleverly punished. It was a fun step inside Dante’s creative process and definitely piqued interest in the canto we read. 000

Brett Vogelsinger @thevogelman.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Tried a new technique for handing back papers today: Students shade the BINGO card based on feedback, tape it in their notebook, and write a “next time note” to themselves based on what’s blank. Brett Vogelsinger @thevogelman.bsky.social · 06/09/2026So, so true! Fuzzy is a good word for it. Because even a phrase like “use it to brainstorm” is so broad and, I would argue, could range from really damaging uses or habits to potentially helpful ones. “Use” is only a helpful verb if we are talking about why, how, to what end + reflection after. 020
Brett Vogelsinger @thevogelman.bsky.social · 06/09/2026I like this line a lot: “Instead of treating "using AI" like something that is equivalent to "doing the thing," we need to think about what we actually want students to be able to do.” In ELA instruction, both sides of the debate tend to overuse the phrase “using AI” without defining it. 171
