Charmingly named bastard service trees have been staples of urban planting for decades. They are neither large nor particularly long-lived, but they are tough and attractive. This solitary tree on Leeds' Headrow shows how a tree can become a landmark and a natural beacon in a streetscape. 🧵

Meet the Pickenham Zelkova On the northern edge of St Andrew’s churchyard, the Pickenham Zelkova cuts a distinctive witches broom silhouette, particularly so in winter. Caucasian zelkovas are handsome but rather rare, so it is a surprise to encounter one in a quiet Norfolk village. #TreeHunting
