If any journo justified their suggestion that Jude Bellingham either shouldn't start in or shouldn't go to this World Cup by criticising his arrogance/petulance/ego/self-interest etc. they should be sacked, because they're either A) Shit at their job, or B) Probably racist. Future England captain.

It has been criminally underreported but Kelsey Pfendler has just rowed solo across the Pacific Ocean from the US coast to Hawaii in record time. A 2,400-mile unsupported journey in 43 days, 17 hours, and 55 minutes. Notably beating the Men’s record by 9 whole days.

Football unites the world.
A montage of front pages of newspapers and magazines from the UK, Spain, France, Japan, Italy, Germany and the US, all of them criticising Fifa president Gianni Infantino for his "capitulation" to Donald Trump in the Balogun affair.

For whom it may concern - please stop saying "Balogun shouldn't have been sent off, so suspending his ban is ok." Sport only works when rules are fair and equally applied. Argue for a fairer appeal process, argue for VAR to be less shit. Don't argue FIFA should be able to pick and choose. Please.

Even if you don't think it was a red, FIFA suspending Balogun's ban is deeply worrying for the state of the game. In article 27, FIFA have a clause where they get to pick and choose how discipline is applied based on reputation, politics or profit - and they are quite prepared to use it for such.

World Cup day one and at the Almanac we're feeling pretty mixed emotions. We love football but hate FIFA, we love the passion of the US, Mexican and Canadian fans but hate seeing Trump's racist policies affecting worthy participants of the sport we love. So we're going to rant about it, naturally.

Trump/Miller and the rest of those fuckwits are trying to win votes. They want to be seen as tough on immigration ahead of November, and Omar Artan's career to them is no price to pay. Where are all the "politics and sport shouldn't mix" crowd now? 2/2

Omar Artan should be refereeing at the World Cup, obviously. But I find the U.S. position on this so telling. This would be the last thing previous iffy hosts (Putin, Videla, Qatar) would have wanted. They wanted to be seen as welcoming, to paint their countries as better than perceptions. 1/2

I've decided the Gemini chat feature on YouTube, when made to summarise podcast episodes, is the only good use for AI. This is indeed what I said, and I stand by it 😂
Gemini chat feature on YouTube summarising a section of a Sporting Almanac Podcast episode discussing the England World Cup squad, correctly noting the hosts describe Ruben Loftus-Cheek as "a bit meh" and not playing in a "proper league".

this official statement from the Football League on the their process for the Southampton Spygate hearing is a pretty wonderful document they want to re-assure fans that they have a plan but they very clearly do not have a plan www.efl.com/news/2026/ma...
EFL Statement: Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final
General

14 May
Words: EFL

Share

The EFL can today provide an interim update on the ongoing disciplinary proceedings involving Southampton following Tuesday’s Championship Play-Off Semi-Final Second Leg.

The Independent Disciplinary Commission hearing will take place on or before Tuesday, 19 May.

The exact date remains under discussion and is expected to be confirmed shortly.

The Commission will issue its decision as soon as possible following consideration of the relevant submissions and evidence.

As the proceedings are being conducted by an Independent Disciplinary Commission, the EFL does not control the proposed timetable.

Notwithstanding this, the EFL continues to plan on the basis that the Championship Play-Off Final will take place as scheduled on Saturday 23 May, with the kick-off time confirmed as 4.30pm.

Supporters should, however, be aware that the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings may yet result in changes to the fixture.

The EFL has a number of contingency plans should they be required, which also includes consideration of any appeal process, if required.
